Garcia's Reaction to the Pettitte un-retirement and signing
Is it just the newspapers trying to stir something up or is Freddy Garcia overreacting to Andy Pettitte's signing?
From what I read, Garcia is certainly not happy - yet, Cashman's job is to do whatever it takes to make the team better and, assuming he can return to 2010 form, Andy Pettitte clearly improves this team and its starting rotation.
Freddy Garcia was an important part of the team last year and earned every penny he was paid. He also gave himself the ability to get a 2011 guaranteed contract with his 2010 performance.
But, such a performance should not guarantee him, or anyone for that matter, a place in the rotation.
If you want the job, Freddy, go out and prove the Yankees wrong by pitching so well that they can't take the job away from you.Forgive me for taking the Contrarian view

This wouldn't be a problem if only they'd signed Johnny Damon.

I feel so bad for Garcia. The dude is going to get paid $4M to potentially be a cheerleader.

Can't blame the guy. In direct competition, he's never going to garner enough support to unseat Andy unless Andy flat out can't hack it.

Well, there is also the fact that Andy will most likely be shown favoritism even if he doesn't earn it. I would be pissed if I was Freddy.

It's hard to feel sorry for someone making $4M to play a game.

Garcia's reaction has been reported for several days - basically, as I read it, his reaction is "whatever".
I can understand his desire to compete, but if offered a better solution at a cheaper price, what team wouldn't jump at the chance.
To me, Garcia (as well as Nova, Hughes, and Pineda) need to show the Yankees that there is a reason NOT to replace them in the rotation with Pettitte. If they do that, then the Yankees decision regarding Andy becomes much more difficult, as well as beneficial for the team.Forgive me for taking the Contrarian view

Re: Garcia's Reaction to the Pettitte un-retirement and signing
It doesnt matter what Garcia does. He knows he is losing a spot no matter what. Hughes is getting it over him. If Hughes really started to suck and Garcia did take his spot, as long as Andy is passable he is getting his spot. Pettitte will get treated with favoritism no matter what.
If I was him, I'd be upset about all this as well.

But if Andy makes the team, wouldn't it be Phil to be odd man out?

I'd be pissed too. He was our 2nd best pitcher last year and he's being frozen out.

Re: Garcia's Reaction to the Pettitte un-retirement and signing
Ugh... I wish we could worry about the things that matter instead of Garcia's feelings on Pettitte. I honestly don't care. If he wants the job and if he deserves the job, he'll go out there and win the job. If he doesn't and someone takes it from him, his feelings really aren't the issue. If anything this should give him more incentive to focus.
Of course, I also suspect this has been spun and portrayed as if Garcia is actually upset about this to get readers. He may be annoyed he has more competition for a spot but if he performs there should be no issue. Hughes, Pineda and Nova have the same problem.NYYFans Fantasy Baseball

Re: Garcia's Reaction to the Pettitte un-retirement and signing
I'm more upset because our 2nd or 3rd best pitcher is going to be in bullpen while we try to put lipstick on a pig (It's been 5 years. Aren't we done with the Hughes experiment yet?) and put up a 40 year old out of sentimental affection.
What's the big deal with Hughes anyway? Isn't he a FA after this year, like Garcia?A fool and his money can throw one heck of a party!

Life with the New York Yankees. If he wanted guarantees I'm sure the KC Royals would have found a spot for him at a price of their choosing.Rocking that "arrogant Yankee fan" attitude.
