It's nice to have a 7th starter but I'm not sure I understand this beyond Andy doesn't appear to be having as much fun with the wife and kids as he thought he would in retirement.

Yeah, I don't understand this either, but he's tight with the Steinbrenner family and Cashman.

The odds are a starter or two gets hurt.

The odds are that Andy is one of them.

Don't get me wrong I love the move because it is so low risk. MiLB deal that will pay him $2.5M but a 40 year old who hasn't pitched in over 18 months, color me skeptical about his ability to contribute much more than what is on the current roster or one of the kids in AAA.

But hey, he threw to a 3.28, 132 ERA+ last time around, even if it was in 129 injury shortended innings.

Until Pettitte is ready to pitch in regular season games, I'm not going to sweat which pitcher he'll replace in the rotation. It may be May 1st by that time.

Re: 2012 Andy Pettitte Performance Thread

Before everyone screams that Pettitte is guaranteed to be useless, remember this:

Pettitte only skipped one year of pitching in the major leagues - same with Adam Wainwright, who is still recovering from major surgery. Wainwright is going in the top 100 in fantasy drafts as I type this.

Although he'll be 40 years old this year, at 38 years old Pettitte was an All-Star, going 11-3 with a 3.28 ERA in 21 starts with a healthy 2.46 K/BB rate. It's completely reasonable to think that he could be a very good #3. The thought of him as the #5 starter makes me nearly giddy.

Oh man, this is awesome news. He might suck but having Pettitte back with a chance to watch him pitch every 5 days is so exciting.

Oh boy, one of my fave athletes ever. Great news.

Like I said, love the move but to me I'm counting on nothing from him. Anything positive he contributes is a bonus.

And please don't compare him to Adam Wainwright who is 10 years younger and was one of the pre-saeon favorites to win the NL Cy-young last year before TJS.

a really nice surprise but not a total shock. AP obviously had lots left in the tank when he hung it up. it seemed like he felt then it was "the right thing to do" in terms of spending more time w his family, but i never got the sense he was toastified and done. the NYY were wise to always "leave the door open" to AP, and it all came together. so you couldn't bank on it for sure or predict it but can't say i'm blown away either .......... "it's about time" !!! GREAT to see the AP thread resurrected !!!
