Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
Nova definitely looked really good. If he pitches like this all season he should have a nice year.

Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
His stuff is really good. He does leave some mistakes there, but because it moves and it's hard, he gets away with mistakes. A really good outing tonight and much needed. I'm glad Joe didn't pull him early in the 7th after the back to back doubles.

Really like this kid. Also credit Martin for repeatedly dealing with that nasty stuff in the dirt with RISP.

Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
This guy is overlooked and underrated just like he was for the majority of his minor league career.
I really think he has the potential to be a "#2" for a championship team.Fistpumping like a champion.

Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
i think 100% without a doubt hes a #2 guy. And martin really is such a good defensive catcher. Even without RISP when Mo was throwing some nasty balls he kept them all in front. It would have been interesting to see how montero would have lined up in comparison to martin.

Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
Gave up a ton of hits, quite a few of them for extra bases, nonetheless an excellent performance to limit them to just two runs.

Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
It seemed that when he needed a strikeout or a ground ball, he was able to get it.
I wonder if a closer analysis of his pitching last night would allow us to test a theory. Let's assume for a moment that Nova was pitching to contact with nobody on base (in an effort to be more economical and last deeper into the game), then changing his approach with men on with that strikeout curve and ground ball-inducing sinker (or whatever he throws). I'm too lazy to go look at every AB to see if there's evidence to support the theory, but it would be fun if someone did."Baseball is about hope, not confidence." -- rajah

Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
Nova pitched really well. His curve was really good and his fastball had movement and command. I disagree that he's our number two because I feel that Kuroda will out pitch him, slightly, over the course of the season. That said, Nova is proving that you don't have to be a highly touted pitching prospect to have success and that having a bit of patient with young pitchers can be very rewarding.

Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
that's the thing about looking @ minor league performances as the total picture for a kids upside
Nova and Cano never showed anywhere near the potential they had. Seems like kids can go along at a certain level then they " get it " and something clicks and they rise to another level. I guess the mystery is in choosing the right ones to be patient withGreetings from Pensacola- highest per capita tattooed grandmothers in the US

Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
When he first got his cup of coffee. I believe in 2010 when he came up his 4 seem was 95-98.
Last year, I think he added the sinker and pretty much used that instead. It took some velocity off naturally. I always wondered why he didn't mix in the 4 seam last year, it was like he completed subbed it out.You know they are not real pies, right?

Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
I love this kid..I have been calling him "my Nova" since he came up. I have never used the word moxie before I set eyes on this kid but he has that -- he's got a bit of swagger without being a jerk and I knew the bad spring would not deter him when he started last night. I'm so happy for him (and us) that he was so effective last night.

Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
I don't recall him ever hitting 98 last year. I think the start against the White Sox was where he first started really dialing it up (95-96).
