2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
I think this guy can be a solid #2 pitcher. I hope that first (two?) start(s) were just bad outings.

Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
This is why I hate ST so much....too many people get worked up over ST results. As long as guys get thru the spring healthy, thats all that matters to me.

Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
I've only been a baseball fan for a few years. Is it common that pitchers get knocked around in ST and then have good seasons?

Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
It definetly happens often that great players (both hitters and pitchers) do nothing in ST....yet no-name players do awesome. ST isnt about results...its about doing whatever you need to do to get into game shape and prepare yourself for the reg season. Often veteran pitchers know that, and thus wont be going all out....they just follow their routine to prepare themselves for April and in some cases are working on different things i.e release points, pitches etc etc.

Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
So, when CC and Kuroda are the only guaranteed spots in the rotation, and nova pitches that poorly, I shouldn't worry about whether or not he makes the rotation? I want Nova to succeed so bad it hurts.

Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
Well I think its ridiculous for anyone to say Nova doesnt have a spot. Short of the guy getting hurt....if he doesnt have a spot when this team breaks camp, then I have a SERIOUS problem with how this team is being run. I think the Yanks are just saying that to motivate Garcia and Hughes.

Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
Pitchers that have something to prove so they have a shot of making the major league team will put on the best display they can in ST. Pitchers like Nova who are assured of a spot on the team will hold back and even experiment with some new pitches and mechanics, which is what you want to see early on in ST because it shows the effort to get better. All this nonsense about him maybe being a 6th starter or that we should be worried over his first start is just that - nonsense.
Let the kids play.

Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
I would not be that surprised if Nova's numbers regressed a bit this year but I am in no way worried about his ST performance unless there is some connection to the injury he sustained at the end of last season.
David Ortiz tested positive for performance enhancing drugs in 2003.

Is it just me or have they made noticeable changes to his mechanics?

Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
um..., if there's anything, his arm movement looks a lil different. kinda slingy, Freddy Garcia style. As those clips progress tho, his arm movement looks more like it had last year. I wouldnt assume it was the staff making changes. I mean... it is spring training.
Don't be paranoid.

Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
VERY freddy garcia to me, but I'm far from a scout. He looks like he's throwing much softer (actual velocity aside), it look like he's just playing catch.
Then again, he looked different every start last year:

Re: 2012 Ivan Nova Performance Thread
Um, yeah, wow. He looks tremendous, which is great since a) he looked lost in ST and b) he needs to pitch well in order to not be the odd man out along with Garcia when Pineda and Pettitte almost inevitably take spots prior to the ASB. The fact that he has options works against him in this situation, so I'm really hoping he leaves the organization no choice when they try to squeeze 7 pitchers into 5 spots.

Great job coming back in that inning. I guess there's a lesson about ST in here somewhere
