(also very solid point about developing other pitches -- be it change or curve to break up the FB/slider tandem).

i mean, it's old school but a pretty sound principle IMO -- stay with a top pitcher who's doing well and get them out before melting point or sooner if it's a B or C level pitcher (like Freddy, who oddly often gets lots of rope past his expiration date). Joe has even hooked Kuroda -- our most reliable pitcher second half pitcher -- early a few times recently. open who was surprised more, us or Kuroda himself.

what is depressing to me is i used to think Girardi -- who i like in many ways as a manager -- would eventually become less poindexterish and rather mellow with time and trust his gut and grow a sense of game feel. instead, he has gone in the other direction, favoring paper matchups, SSS head to head stats, and the desire to plan two or three moves ahead -- vs going with the hot hand, trusting your better pitchers, trusting long-term vs SSS stats, and having an appropriate sense of urgency for the right move NOW when the game is on the line. oddly, the best move last nite was to do nothing at all.

not that any model is gonna guarantee success -- but far too many of his pen moves just seem tone-deaf to the obvious. and the obvious context is, only soriano has been really good lately, and he's getting overworked too. even d rob has been a dice roll the last month. so getting twitchy to get to your B pen is dicey for results and also aggravates burnout factor. and then when you opt for an overworked guy that hasn't been that effective lately w bad splits vs a hitter w reverse splits and then worse farther down the lineup ....... well then ........... [HEAD EXPLODES] ...........
Good post. It seems like Girardi either lacks the capacity to appreciate the feel for a game and apply context to his moves, or simply does not trust himself enough to make a move without being able to justify it with some stat of questionable relevance. I don't know if this will ever change.

Clearly hitting a wall after most IP in his career... Velocity is down, breaking stuff is tumbling, command is crap

Also, dont mean to bring up his conditioning yet again, But is it me, or is he also fatter than ever? Someone really needs to get on him about the importance of staying in shape throughout the season so, you know, you can actually pitch effectively for more than 180 innings in a season

Chance he's still a Yankee next season? I think he's done a pretty good job for the most part, but if they can get somethign useful for him I think you have to do it.

    I'd say a 65% chance.

He's due for a substantial raise... He has no value in a trade except as part of a combo deal now

Gone are the days where he could be a centerpiece

Dude just does not pitch well in Toronto. I think his ERA is north of 6 in the Rogers Centre.

That and where was his curve today as it looked like a steady diet of flat breaking balls that were repeatedly hammered.

The bottom line is the guy is a disappointment. Picked up a bunch of wins this season, lost another bunch of games, pitched like crap when you needed him to come up big. There's just no counting on him.

Tonight is so big for Hughes. A win means the Yanks have CC lined up for Game 1.

I was at that game. The Twins had no chance.

If I remember correctly, he was blowing people away with his fastball. Barely used the curve or cutter at all.

Not feeling it. Don't think he will be great nor terrible. Just ehh...

6inning/4runs. Lots of hits and of course a HR or two.

all his pitches are the upper half of the plate, and he's throwing a slider that hangs in the middle

velocity it down, command is crap, and he's fat again

Probably the worst 6.2IP, 8 k, 7 base runner performance I've ever seen.

    But I'll take it!
