Henderson averaged 7 WAR a year between 1980 and 1994; Jeter's topped 7, twice. There's really no comparison.
Yes, Henderson's peak years were clearly and significantly better than Jeter's peak years. No doubt.

I'm so glad I started this by saying Henderson was a better player than Jeter.

At least, in that other thread we didn't really have to do a side-by-side comparison between Jeter and Willie Mays.

I feel bad for Jeter, it's like we can't ever praise him without it degenerating into a conversation of who and what he's not.

what were his peak years then? I see it as a 14 season stretch from 80-94. This is Jeter's 17th season.

this is no slight on Jeter who is probably one of the 50 greatest players ever and is the best story of the current season.

I can't believe people got this into it with YankeeFan1421 after his showing in the Teixeira thread.

In the Tex thread, during the off-season I said that Tex is a slightly better than average player. And that's what he is.

    Actually - he's not.

So.....how about that Jeter? Having a pretty damn good season so far.

Anyone want to talk about that in the 2012 Derek Jeter Performance Thread?

    Just wondering...

My wife's cousin was at my house last night and we were talking about how incredibly hot his start has been.
Everything is a hit. You'd think even when a player is going through a great stretch, he smashes a few line drives at a fielder. Not Jeter. He's either sold under a incredibly lucky star or he's the new Rogers Hornsby..

And every game seems to be a multi-hit game.

I love the fact that he's hitting like a madman. The naysayers even had me believing for a little bit that he was finished.
Go Jeter! You've made Yankee baseball very fun over the past 17 years. Thank you.

Its too bad in that third game of the opening series he went hitless, or he would have a hit in every game this year.

It's been awesome to watch, and I hope it's foreshadowing a nice, sustainable return for Jeter. If he can even approximate his career production, he's a huge asset to this team offensively. Of course, if he could sustain his 185 OPS+...

He probably would've had 762 SB instead of 762 HR. Bonds was lethal even before his head blew up to the size of epcot center.

Without steroids he was better than anyone in the last 20 years. With it, he was better than anyone ever.

I have to disagree with this.
Without juice, he wasn't better than Willie Mays, Hank Aaron or Mickey Mantle.
And those are three just off the top of my head.

White Knight said of the last 20 years without steroids.

    Which would mean since 1992.

    Bonds was great pre steroids.

Post steroids he became a superhero out of a comic book.

Re: 2012 Derek Jeter Performance Thread

Bonds pre steroids numbers are up there with Mays, Mantle and Aaron.

Aaron from first full year till age 35 season 1954-1969 .938 OPS

Mantle first full year till age 35 season 1952-1967 .997 OPS

Mays first full year till age 35 season 1954-1966 .992 OPS

Bonds first full year 1987 till 1998 season .981 OPS

Bonds started juicing in 1999 according to game of shadows because of the attention McGwire and Sosa got for the 1998 HR chase.

From 1999-2007 which was when Bonds was on the juice his OPS was 1.217

Let's not lose perspective of how great Barry Bonds was pre steroids because he was still great he just became Babe Ruth like post steroids.

I thought you of all people would recognize the difficulty of substantiating such a statement. Arguments can be made on both sides and it's inconclusive.
