Re: 2012 Derek Jeter Performance Thread
Jeter is much more impressive now than he was in his prime in my opinion. Just his continued longevity and consistency at his age is what makes him truly one of the greatest ball players of all time.

Yogi Berra = Rodney Dangerfield
Truthfully, it doesn't really matter how we rank them. Suffice to say that we fans are lucky to be able to say that we've been able to watch two of the absolute Yankees' greats and greats of the game of baseball play in Jeter and Rivera. And when you think about it, technology has allowed us to see them each and every game, which just wasn't possible when it came to the monument level Yankees of the past. It's a golden era with these two.

ARLINGTON, Tex. — Age is not an issue that Derek Jeter likes to entertain. A year ago, when he was 36, he bristled at suggestions that his extended batting slump was the result of his advancing years.
He was not hitting because of a flaw in his hitting mechanics, he said, not the numbers on his birth certificate.
[snip]
Asked why he finds discussion of his age so distasteful, Jeter said he did not find it useful. In other words, how would it help him as a player to acknowledge that age eventually sends every hitter into retirement?
“We’re all getting older,” he said. “That’s pointing out the obvious. Everyone is getting older, but just because you’ve gotten older doesn’t mean you can’t do things.”
[snip]
As Jeter walked out of the clubhouse, he was asked about his former teammate Hideki Matsui, who is on the verge of signing with Tampa Bay.
Jeter said he was happy for him, then noted that Matsui was older than he is — by two weeks.
“Toshiyori,” Jeter said, using the Japanese word for old man.September 28, 2008 - the day the HOF got a wake-up Moose call.

Re: 2012 Derek Jeter Performance Thread
I know, I know. It seems unfair to leave him out.
Basically the Yankees have had the greatest player of all time, the greatest 1B of all time, two of the three greatest CF of all time, the greatest C of all time, the greatest closer of all time, and arguably the greatest SS since Honus Wagner.
All that and Luis Sojo, too."Baseball is about hope, not confidence." -- rajah

Re: 2012 Derek Jeter Performance Thread
Jeter might not be the biggest power threat, but baseball-reference.com lists 14,141 players with at least one PA since 1901.
Of that, Jeter ranks 212th in career HR. That puts him ahead of 98.5% of all hitters since 1901. And that's only going to get better if he plays for 3 more years. Or 6.Fantasy Baseball: Larrupin' Lou's

Re: 2012 Derek Jeter Performance Thread
I believe the C discussion is between Yogi and Bench and I'm willing to go out on a limb and take Yogi.
I said two of the greatest three CF out of respect for Willie Mays. Plenty of room for debate among those three. I don't believe Cobb was a CF (could be wrong) ... as for Speaker, I don't know how to compare against a player from that long ago. I'm not sure that pre-1920 baseball was really quite the same game."Baseball is about hope, not confidence." -- rajah

Last night, the Captain passed Lou Gehrig to go into second place on the Yankee list for Times On Base. Only Babe Ruth ahead of him.

I think you could roll it up there right now and DJ would shoot the gap either way. I am envious of those of you who can watch him every game.

Re: 2012 Derek Jeter Performance Thread
Maybe right in the top 20, but right off the top of my head I can think of a few better imo. If I really searched I might could find a few more, but I'll say he's maybe top 15:
Pedro Martinez
Randy Johnson
Alex Rodriguez
Barry Bonds
Ken Griffey Jr.
Gregg Maddux
Roger Clemens
Frank Thomas
Albert Pujols
Chipper Jones
Mariano Rivera
Tony Gwynn
Rickey Henderson
Jeff Bagwell
Wade Boggs

Re: 2012 Derek Jeter Performance Thread
I would take the 1982-89 version of Boggs over Jeter. Boggs had a four year stretch between 85-88 where he was just insane. Hit over .360 three of those four years (the other was .357) and his OBP was anywhere between .450-.476. Thats pretty awesome. I would take Bagwell too.
None of this demeans Jeter...he's great.

Re: 2012 Derek Jeter Performance Thread
Okay, personally I think it's impossible to really compare pitchers to position players, first off, and five of your players are pitchers.
Jeter is a better player than Boggs, Bagwell, Gwynn, Thomas and Jones. He's had a better career than Griffey (due to injuries), and I'd take him any day over Rickey Henderson (as insanely talented as Henderson was).
The only ones I can agree with are A-Rod (much as I'm not a fan), Bonds and Pujols.
