    2012 Derek Jeter Performance Thread

What's next for Derek Jeter, the newest member of the 3000 hit club?

Jeter is in the second year of a three year, $51 million contract with an option for a fourth season. Last year Jeter hit .297/.355/.388 in the regular season, resulting in 2.3 fWAR. He was voted as a 2011 All-Star starter, and despite injuries, had a bit of a bounce back season after 2010's .270/.340/.370 campaign.

PECOTA projects Jeter will have a .348 OBP and a .382 SLG and Bill James projects .360 OBP and a .393 SLG. Both seem pretty realistic to me after the last two seasons - Jeter definitely has something left to contribute with, even if he's not the guy he was during his peak seasons. He's also stolen 18 and then 16 bases the last two seasons, so even though he's slowed down he's still a positive on the base paths. Perhaps he'll bring back his home run swing and smack a home run total in the double digits.

I'd predict he's going to hit over .300. He did after DJ3K until the end of the season.

    I'm bullish on Jeter.

I'm thinking he turns in a .306/.369/.390 line

    I'd sign up for that.

Spring is a time for boundless optimism, of course, but I too feel good about the year Jeter will have.

The Captain's missing his buddy a bit:
    http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/news/...k_nyy&c_id=nyy
TAMPA, Fla. -- Yankees captain Derek Jeter said that it seems more "awkward" not having Jorge Posada in camp than it was to come to Spring Trainings without Andy Pettitte.

"With Andy, he was the dumb one of the group that left and went to Houston for a few years," a grinning Jeter said. "We sort of got used to him not being here. Jorge, probably it hasn't hit me yet.

"In Spring Training, pitchers and catchers are on a different schedule anyway, so you really don't see people too often. That'll be a tough one, because as everyone knows, we were together all the time."

Jeter said that he has no choice but to move on without Posada, his close friend and a frequent meal companion on the road, but acknowledged it will be "kind of weird" not to have him around.

"We're like brothers," Jeter said. "All of us are like brothers, because we've had so many experiences together. I keep in touch with him all the time."

Man, that must suck. I wonder how Jeter will perform without the guys around him (if Mo retires, too).

i'd be happy with anything around .270 with an .335 OBP. anything better than that would be a surprise to me. i have hope but my brain doesn't let me think about that for too long. please, please derek, just try not to roll it over the left side too often.

Jeter is out for a week with a calf injury. Fortunately, it's not the same calf that kept Jeter out for a month last year.

I have complete confidence in the Captain having a Jeteresque season this year - I predict a .319/.387/.458 slash line.

It's because, especially for non- and even casual baseball fans, Derek Jeter is baseball. Besides the dregs and cahnival bahkehs up in Beantown, who the hell wouldn't want a Derek Jeter jersey? Nobody!

That's really sad, it makes me feel how short life is as a human. Even if we live to 90+, our prime's are only from around 23-35, a mere 12 years. Maybe on a better planet they live to be 300 with 50 year prime's.

Oddly enough doesn't get as much credit as he should in the Yankees' success (relative to Rivera).

I'd say Jeter is the most valuable Yankee of the last 16 years and the best player on each World Series team.

Praying for another good season from Mr. Jeter!

I missed his hit in the first inning by just one minute. Was it a typical hit to right field?

I'd agree on the 16 year MVP, though Mo is a close second.

But it would be hard to make the case that Jeter was the best player on the 2009 team or on most of the teams when Bernie was at his peak in the late nineties.
