Teixeira to have MRI on left wrist Tuesday
Slugger tweaks pre-existing injury diving for grounder against O's
By Ethan Asofsky / MLB.com | 07/30/12 11:31 PM ET
NEW YORK -- Mark Teixeira left in the seventh inning of Monday's 5-4 loss to the Orioles after aggravating a pre-existing wrist injury that he suffered on Sunday night. X-rays taken during the game came out negative, but Teixeira will have an MRI on his left wrist on Tuesday morning.
"It's a big concern," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He's a huge part of our lineup, and hopefully it's only a couple of days, but we'll find out more tomorrow."
The injury worsened Monday, when Teixeira dove for J.J. Hardy's RBI single and landed on his glove, but the first baseman stayed in the game after assuring Girardi he could play defense. Once the top half of the inning had ended, Teixeira headed into the clubhouse to see if he could swing a bat, but had trouble and exited the game.
Teixeira was wearing a protective brace around his wrist after the game, and he said he'd most likely miss a few days before the injury completely heals.
"I'm not crazy concerned because I tried to play through it," Teixeira said. "It's one of those things where if you really hurt yourself bad, you're out and you can't do much. I was kind of nursing it today when I was swinging, so hopefully it's just a couple days and I can get back out there."
The initial injury occurred on a swing during Teixeira's third at-bat against Red Sox starter Felix Doubront on Sunday. The switch-hitting first baseman was hitting from the right side of the plate, and though he immediately felt sore after the play, he finished the game without a problem. After treatment on Sunday night, Teixeira wore a protective sleeve on Monday and felt he could play through the injury.
Teixeira dealt with a wrist injury in 2009, and after a cortisone shot and a few days of rest, he was fine to play the rest of the year. He's hoping this is a similar injury.
"I popped an oblique before, where you go down and you're out of the game," Teixeira said. "It's something that I tried to play through. More achy and sore than major pain, and that's why I feel OK about it. Hopefully, it's not too bad."

This info has already been posted in Tex's performance thread but it belongs here also:

Whew.NEW YORK -- The Yankees received good news on Tuesday morning concerning Mark Teixeira's left wrist, as the first baseman's MRI revealed only inflammation and no structural damage.
Teixeira received a cortisone injection after being seen by team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad, as well as specialist Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser, at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He will be re-evaluated in three days, the Yankees said.

Joba available tonight.
http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/stor...ba-chamberlainNew York Yankees right-handed reliever Joba Chamberlain will be activated from the disabled list prior to Tuesday night's game against the Baltimore Orioles.
"That's the intention," general manager Brian Cashman said at a news conference announcing the Chad Qualls-for-Casey McGehee trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates. "We had some conversations regarding this. I talked to my trainer today and said, 'Hey, listen, if we trade and lose Chad Qualls, is there any medical reason that would be of concern to activate Joba starting tonight?' He said, 'No.' I said, 'OK.'"27 World Championships

Why isn't this thread in the main (inside the lines) forum?

Ever since Brett Gardner and his amazing non-wonder elbow cropped up, every time that the Yankees announce that it should be Ok with rest, it just scares the hell out of me.

Re: The Injury Update Thread 2012
Some updates:
http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2012/08/0...me-into-focus/The injured Yankees were dressed in their pinstripes again this morning to say hello, pose for pictures and bump fists with season-ticket holders filling the warning track. Those players included Alex Rodriguez, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte and Brett Gardner.
Joe Girardi said Andy Pettitte has been frustrated with the healing rate of his fractured fibula. There was talk of a setback recently. The Yankees are still thinking September for him.
“That’s our hope,” Girardi said. “I think Andy thought with his broken leg that he was going to be on the mound in two weeks. That’s just Andy. I think you have to hold players back and they have to understand that it’s a process. But as players, we get anxious to come back. That’s the bottom line. I think that’s what happened with Andy.
“It takes time. When you miss as much time as he has, you have to build a guy up. You can’t rush him and make him come back too soon when he’s not ready. We’ll just take it day by day.”
As for Rivera and his mending ACL, is it 100 percent that he isn’t coming back this season as Brian Cashman has said?
“Nothing is ever 100 percent, but I would say it’s 99 percent, 99.9,” Girardi said. “But nothing is ever 100 percent in life. There have been a lot of people that have said that they’re done playing and they find a way back. We will die, though. I can tell you that for sure.”
As for Gardner possibly returning in September from his elbow surgery, Girardi said, “If there’s a way he can help us, we’ll definitely use him, especially in the month of September when you can expand rosters. If there’s certain things that he can’t do and it’s during the month of August, then you’re kind of limited and you limit your roster. But with an expanded roster, if he can help us, we’ll definitely use him, if it doesn’t jeopardize him getting back next year.”

Re: The Injury Update Thread 2012
Partly, it's the experience with the Yankees medical/rehab staff in the past, where things often take longer to heal than the press releases suggest. "The Yankees are still thinking September? certainly doesn't sound very definite, especially when followed by, "That's our hope." I don't have any confidence in these guys.
If it works - which is debatable - it may help rebuild the muscle around the bone, not the bone itself. Same way he used it in hopes that it would help his elbow heal more quickly.A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines.- Barry Manilow

Re: The Injury Update Thread 2012
I think most professional sports doctors get a bump rap from fans as they try to get their players back on the field of play as quickly as their recovered injuries will allow them.
The problem is the healing of the bone not the rebuilding of the muscle around the fibula. It's all Cashman's fault!

Re: The Injury Update Thread 2012
Perhaps. In my book, the Yankees rehab staff has never quite overcome the very deserved bad rap they got in l'affaire Wang.
In any case, you're saying that sometimes things take longer to heal than people think, which was basically what I was saying. The Yankees seem to be expressing hope rather than confidence that Pettitte will be back in September.
He's going to have to rebuild muscle, too. In any case, I think you're making a wee tad too much out of a silly, offhand, Pettitte-HGH line.A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines.- Barry Manilow
