    The Injury Update Thread 2012

Might as well get it started.

LoHud has some updates on Joba (rehab from TJ surgery going well, not expected back before June), Andruw Jones (rehab from offseason minor knee surgery going well, reporting early), A-Rod ("'good to go' after his winter surgery"), Cervelli ("100%" recovered from concussions), Brad Meyers, and Pedro Feliciano. Could Feliciano actually throw a pitch or two for the Yankees this year?

Re: The Injury Update Thread 2012

I'll quote what I put in the first of these threads, in 2009:

Please note that this is not an Official Injury Update Thread. Feel free to post news about injuries to a particular player in that player's megathread. I just thought that it would be nice to have a single thread that would be mainly for news about various injuries to anyone on the team, so those who are bothered by the megathreads could come here for the latest on who's hurt and who's coming back.

Andruw Jones is feeling much better after that off-season surgery:

Andruw Jones could not have played the outfield regularly last season. His left knee was sore enough that he required regular treatments, drainings and cortisone shots to keep him in a platoon role. An offseason surgery, he believes, cleaned up the problem and he reported to camp this morning to do some early work on the field.

“It was bad,” Jones said. “I’m not going to lie to you. It didn’t affect me whatsoever (in terms of performance). It affected me that I couldn’t stay on the field the whole game or play a little more if they needed me, but it’s one of those things that I just had to deal with and try to grind it all the way through the season, and when the season was over, try and address it.”

Jones said he focused on conditioning this season. He was able to do more running after the knee was repaired, so he ran and did agility drills, focusing on those areas more than lifting. He seems roughly the same size as last season, but Jones said he’s been moving much better.

“I feel great,” he said. “I’ve been running a lot. My goal was to get back in great playing shape and be a little lighter on my legs so I can go out there and play any time they call my name.

I think we all just assumed this was the case but it's good to hear.
    http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/yanke...N4wNz2TLXSL4uI
TAMPA -- Ivan Nova’s arm feels fine, and he says there are no aftereffects of the injury that cut short his start in Game 5 of the AL division series as the New York Yankees were eliminated.
After leading major league rookies in wins last season, Nova got the win in the rain-interrupted opener against Detroit. But he lost the series final, leaving after just two inning because of a strained flexor in his right forearm.
Nova healed without complications, and the right-hander began throwing off a mound well before spring training.
“It’s perfect,” he said Wednesday. “100 percent. I was worried a little bit, but they said you’re going to be fine.”

Probably just minor but worth a report:
    http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/news/...k_nyy&c_id=nyy
TAMPA, Fla. -- Yankees catcher Austin Romine experienced back soreness after going through workouts on Thursday and may miss a day, manager Joe Girardi said.

Romine, 23, is one of eight catchers the Yankees have in camp and just one of three on the club's 40-man roster.

Joba threw 16 pitches off a full-size mound this morning (per WINS radio, so no link). He said it felt fine.

What an incredible feeling it was being back on the mound. No soreness, felt really strong, and the ball came out great!

Re: The Injury Update Thread 2012

    And more from Joba:

“Sixteen pitches, you don’t think that’s much,” Chamberlain said. “But when you haven’t been on a mound since June, your legs get a little tired just from warming up, throwing my long-toss, then my flat ground, before I got on the mound. My legs are a little tired, which is a good feeling. Towards about 10, I could start to feel it. And that’s when you rely on your mechanics and trust your motion. I think I did a pretty good job of that. That’s a part of continuing to build up off the full mound, is getting to 25-30 pitches and getting legs under you.”

Chamberlain is still hoping he’ll be back sooner than expected. He has a best-case scenario in his head, but he said he’s going to “do a Mo” and not tell anyone.

“Everything went great,” Chamberlain said. “It looks like it’s a long ways away I can tell you that much. But it’s a great feeling. It’s great to just be able to get up there and trust my arm, and trust the work I’ve put in to this point. Just to let it go, it’s free and easy. And there’s really minimal effort to get it over there. It was just nice to be able to get on there and get this new chapter started and start the process from here and move on.”

Following up on the Romine report from last week:
    http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/news/...k_nyy&c_id=nyy
TAMPA, Fla. -- Catcher Austin Romine has suffered a "little bit of a setback" due to back inflammation, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Wednesday.

Romine has been out of workouts since Friday, and Girardi said he is doing rehab work and will take his time recovering until he is fully healthy and able to get back on the field.

"We're just making sure that area is very stable. We want that to come back very stable and be very strong before we put him back," Girardi said. "He had an episode last year in August, so we want to just make sure that it's really strong.

"It's a little bit of a setback, there's no doubt about it."

Re: The Injury Update Thread 2012

    A few minor injury notes:

    • Add Manny Delcarmen to the list of injured Yankees. He has a strained lat and is expected to miss “at least four or five days,” according to Girardi. Apparently he was one of the guys who had been pitching pretty well this spring.

    • If you’re keeping track, the spring injuries look like this: Delcarmen (lat) Austin Romine (back), Kyle Higashioka (shoulder), Russell Branyan (back) and George Kontos (oblique). Should be able to scratch Kontos name off that list soon enough. He’s scheduled to play catch tomorrow and hopes to be back on a mound shortly.

    Today's updates:

    • Quick injury updates:

George Kontos: Played catch today. Still not off a mound yet. He’s out with a sore oblique.
Manny Delcarmen: Will be reevaluated after a week to see if he’s ready to play catch. He’s out with a strained lat.
Austin Romine: Still out with a sore back. When will he be back? “Not for a while,” Girardi said.
Russell Branyan: According to Girardi he’s still “day-to-day” with a sore back.
Kyle Higashioka: Caught today and can swing on Monday. He’s been out with a sore shoulder.

Re: The Injury Update Thread 2012

Eduardo Nuñez was hit by a pitch in Monday's game; X-rays were negative.

Eduardo Nunez was hit by a pitch in the back of the right hand this afternoon. He was immediately removed from the game, and although the initial diagnosis is a bone contusion — a bruise, basically — Nunez will go for precautionary x-rays back in Tampa.

“It feels fine right now,” he said before leaving Bright House Field. “I don’t think there’s anything broken.”

Nunez can move his fingers and begin to make a fist, but he said it’s still pretty sore. He’s hoping he doesn’t have to miss more than a couple of days, and he joked that he wanted to act like a tough guy on the field and not show that it hurt as much as it did. If it’s more serious than expected, the Yankees will have to sort through Ramiro Pena, Bill Hall and Jayson Nix in search of a true utility man.

“Just a lot of pain now, a bruise,” Nunez said. “I think everything’s fine.”

Re: The Injury Update Thread 2012

There's a whole thread about Dave Robertson's foot injury in Inside the Lines:

    http://forums.nyyfans.com/showthread...-Rays-Negative

Here's the news story from Yankees.com:

    http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/news/...s_nyy&c_id=nyy

A MRI taken on Yankees right-hander David Robertson's right foot showed "cause for concern," according to manager Joe Girardi, and the reliever returned to a Tampa hospital on Thursday for additional tests.

Girardi said that Robertson will have a CT scan and a weight-bearing X-ray taken on his sprained right midfoot, an injury that he suffered on Wednesday evening after falling down a flight of stairs while moving boxes at his residence.

Robertson was taken for an X-ray on Thursday morning, which was negative, before having the MRI. Team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad will review the tests in New York and consult with foot specialist Dr. Justin Greisberg. The Yankees expect to have more information on Friday.

"You hope a lot of times you can clear things up with one test," Girardi said. "I don't want to speculate. I would love to know what's going on exactly, if there's something that we're going to miss him for a substantial period, but I don't know."

Robertson was fitted for a walking boot and will have the use of crutches. Speaking to reporters at George M. Steinbrenner Field on Thursday morning after his MRI, Robertson said that he was taking boxes out for recycling when the mishap occurred.

"I just misjudged one step and just caught it funny, and it kind of rolled under me," Robertson said. "... I don't feel like it's something that's going to set me back a long time. We just need to let it get some of that soreness out of it right now."

He did not initially believe the injury was serious, but noticed a throbbing sensation about an hour later, prompting him to call head athletic trainer Steve Donohue.

"They were empty boxes; they weren't even heavy boxes," Girardi said. "I told him, 'Kick them down the stairs next time.'"

Bit of a setback for Nunez:
    http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2012/03/1...-for-teixeira/
    • Eduardo Nunez took batting practice today, but his right hand was still sore and he’s been shut down again. Joe Girardi said Nunez will probably get a “couple more days” to let the hand heal, but no new tests have been scheduled. Nunez was hit by a pitch on Monday and hasn’t played since.

Re: The Injury Update Thread 2012

On the other hand, the news about Robertson was encouraging ... already discussed at length in the Dedicated Robinson's Foot Thread in Inside the lines, but here's a link to the story about the "bone bruise" on Yankees.com:

    http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/news/...k_nyy&c_id=nyy

From the same story, a few minor updates on minor leaguers:

    • Outfielder Dewayne Wise tweaked a hamstring, according to Girardi, and was scratched from Saturday's trip. In other injury updates, George Kontos (oblique) has thrown a bullpen session, Manny Delcarmen (right lat) has resumed playing catch and the Yankees are satisfied with the progress of Austin Romine (back inflammation). Romine is on a more conservative treatment and strengthening program than he would be during the regular season.

Re: The Injury Update Thread 2012

I posted this in the D-Rob injury thread but it belongs here too.
    http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2012/03/1...th-no-problem/
Dave Robertson played catch this afternoon and had no problems with his bruised foot. Hes not sure when hell get off a mound again, but hes not worried about being ready for Opening Day.

As long as I don’t have any setbacks, I don’t see why I wouldn’t be, he said.

Robertson will be without a boot or crutches from here on out, and he walked into the clubhouse with no limp or any sign of injury.
    From the same source:
    • Bad news on Dan Burawa. What the Yankees initially thought was a rib cage injury is actually a tear in his oblique. Burawa had an MRI and is seeing a doctor later tonight, but hes expecting to miss quite a bit of time. As you might expect, hes pretty disappointed. Seemed to be making a strong impression in his first big league camp.

    • Austin Romine is scheduled to take dry swings in the next day or two and hes hoping to be playing in about a week. He said he no longer feels anything in his back, but the Yankees want him to build up strength so it won’t happen again. He called this injury similar to the one he had last year in Trenton.

Nunez was originally in tonight's lineup against the Red Sox but has been scratched.
    http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2012/03/13/nunez-scratched/
Eduardo Nunez has been scratched from the Yankees lineup after once again feeling pain in his right hand. He asked to play through it, but the Yankees told him no.

“Well try in a couple more days,” Joe Girardi said.

    • It’s a positive sign that Dave Robertson was able to jog without pain, but Girardi said he’ll need to throw a few times on the side before he starts getting into games again. “He’s been out long enough that I think he’s got to do some bullpens,” Girardi said.

    • Girardi seems to be used to getting velocity questions. This was the first thing he said about Robertson’s half hour on a treadmill: “I don’t have the speed, but there was no pain.”

    More on Freddy's hand:

    http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/news/...s_nyy&c_id=nyy

Yankees right-hander Freddy Garcia exited Wednesday's 7-5 loss against the Blue Jays with a right hand bruise. Garcia left Florida Auto Exchange Stadium for Tampa, Fla., to undergo precautionary X-rays, which came back negative.

Garcia, competing for a spot in New York's rotation, took a one-hop comebacker from Toronto left fielder Edwin Encarnacion off his throwing hand to lead off the fourth inning, immediately looking down at where the ball had struck him and leaving the game with the trainer. The 35-year-old right-hander wasn't trying to catch the ball, but it hit between his right thumb and index finger, which quickly swelled up.

"You don't want to see any of that, but it just happens," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter will be out until Tuesday because of a stiff left calf.

Re: The Injury Update Thread 2012

Swisher and Martin have issues (this is from yesterday):

    • Joe Girardi said it was strictly a precaution, but Nick Swisher went for an MRI today. “This could just be soreness and they’re ruling everything out,” Girardi said. “He said he felt good today.” This morning, Swisher said he could have played if this were the regular season. He seemed completely unconcerned.

    • Russell Martin’s tightness isn’t exactly in his groin. It’s kind of between his groin and his hamstring, and it’s something he once felt in spring training with the Dodgers. He didn’t speak up that time and wound up with a legitimate injury, so he decided to play it safe this time. He sounded a lot like Swisher: Just feels like he’s being cautious with something minor.

Nuñez is back. And Romine is feeling better:

    • Nunez will wear a special batting glove to protect the bruised area between his thumb and wrist. He came through batting practice with no problems today.

    • Austin Romine, who’s been out with a sore back, will do tee and toss and play catch today. It’s his first baseball work since being shutdown with the injury early in camp.
