Re: 2012 Mariano Rivera Performance Thread
Some people bring up the reasonable side that relievers have a much different job. His numbers are going to look better because of the IP. However, none have been as dominant as Mo. It's asinine to think he wouldn't be a first ballot, but unanimous? I can understand he wouldn't be.

TAMPA, Fla. -- David Aardsma is far from a wide-eyed rookie, having pitched in the majors six seasons.
But when the former Seattle closer, after doing some early-morning conditioning, walked past the bullpen and saw who was throwing, he stopped and watched.
"Amazing," Aardsma said, shaking his head after Mariano Rivera threw five cutters to bullpen coach Mike Harkey, who barely had to move his glove.
Rivera threw his second bullpen -- this one 34 pitches compared to 22 in his first one on Sunday -- and said he'll throw again "Friday or Saturday." Joe Girardi said Rivera's first game likely will be March 15 or 16.
Rivera spent several minutes after his session talking with guest instructor Andy Pettitte, who later in the day threw batting practice.
"Pitching," Rivera said of the topic of discussion. "Just how many young pitchers we have here."

Re: 2012 Mariano Rivera Performance Thread
Per MLBtr:
Rivera May announce decision prior to All Star Break
"I think maybe it will be before the All-Star break," legendary Yankees closer Mariano Rivera told Kevin Kernan of the New York Post regarding an announcement of whether he will pitch in 2013. Rivera wants to be certain of his decision, which he seems to have already made privately. Rivera said that when he does retire, "It would be nice that you tell the fans, so every stadium you go to, the fans will be there to show their appreciation and you appreciate the fans."

Re: 2012 Mariano Rivera Performance Thread
it's not like he held conferences to announce 'he knows what he's doing.'
it's just his answer to media questions and media ran them as stories

Re: 2012 Mariano Rivera Performance Thread
People put the guy on a peda stool. He's a great pitcher and by all accounts a good guy, but there are things about him that make you shake your head.
He arrives late to camp most years.
He rarely if ever travels to away spring training games.
He nearly always comes up with a minor injury to beg off the All Star Game (I actually applaud this)
He now makes these constant statements hinting retirement.
It's not fun. It's not funny.Equally as calm as ClownPickle ~(+/- 1)

Re: 2012 Mariano Rivera Performance Thread
I'm tired of that music of his. He should mix it up a bit. He's so boring. One pitch. One music. Over and over again.
"Deep to left! Yastrzemski will not get it! It's a home run! A three-run homer by Bucky Dent! And the Yankees now lead by a score of 3-2!" - New York Yankees announcer Bill White (October 2, 1978)
