The causes of singer Whitney Houston's death were drowning and the "effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use," the Los Angeles County coroner's office says.


She was found dead last month in the bathtub of her hotel room in Beverly Hills, California.

Does that mean past cocaine use or at the time of death?

Whitney Houston had cocaine in her system when she died -- this according to the L.A. County Coroner.

The L.A. County Coroner has just released the singer's official cause of death -- accidental drowning ... but the report also notes heart disease and cocaine use were contributing factors to Whitney's demise.

A source connected to the investigation tells us it is "very possible" Whitney had a heart attack that caused her to lose consciousness and drown. The heart attack may have been triggered by hardening of the arteries as a result of cocaine use.

As we previously reported, Whitney was found dead in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton hotel last month and several pills were found on the scene -- including Xanax, Ibuprofen, and Midol.

Investigators found NO EVIDENCE of cocaine in the hotel room.

How much in the past are you referring to? She had it in her system at the time of death?

She also had a large cocktail of drugs in her system. This thing is just one big ole mess.

Actually, the muscle relaxers are the part that got me. So you've got lots of cocaine in your system, then you take a few prescription drugs that I can't even name, and you take a muscle relaxer, and you're in the bath tub.

The only thing she needed to insure death beyond this was to step on the track and kiss the 3rd rail.
