Re: 2012 CC Sabathia performance thread
I almost started this thread the other day with the same news.
He's lost 15 lbs so far. He said it himself when he was interviewed at the half of the Knicks game on MLK Day.

He'll gain it all back during the season. He looked as fat as ever by the time October rolled around last year, after losing 30 or so pounds in the offseason.

Re: 2012 CC Sabathia performance thread
He was on Fox & Friends this morning along with Adrian Gonzales and he indeed looked svelte.
Here's hoping it makes a difference!

Re: 2012 CC Sabathia performance thread
With Tim Wakefield and Javier Vazquez retired, CC now becomes the active strikeout leader in the league with 2,017.
1) CC Sabathia - 2,017
2) Kevin Millwood - 1,976
3) Roy Halladay - 1,934
4) Livan Hernandez -1,928
5) Johan Santana - 1,877
Only Halladay may give him a run. He's likely to hold that title for a while.

Re: 2012 CC Sabathia performance thread
CC is younger than Halladay. I'm not worried.

Re: 2012 CC Sabathia performance thread
Halladay is in much better shape and takes much greater care of himself than CC

Re: 2012 CC Sabathia performance thread
Is there any evidence that being overweight is a problem for pitchers in terms of injuries? I mean, this guy isn't running marathons.

Re: 2012 CC Sabathia performance thread
CC can retire with more strikeouts than Doc. Doc can still be the active strikeout leader for one or two seasons.

Re: 2012 CC Sabathia performance thread
Well I looked around and it seems the hardball times did an article on where or not size matters and it seems overweight pitchers last longer and out perform their skinnier counterparts.
Seems like baseball just does away with conventional athletic wisdom.

Just like the whole leftys last longer adage. I don't know if it's true, but it always seems like it.

Re: 2012 CC Sabathia performance thread
It's possible there is a sample bias involved though. How many overweight pitchers actually make it to the big leagues? I'm not going to read that entire study to find out if this was true or accounted for, but it seems to me that it a player of Sabathia's weight is rare in the majors. To make it to that level you have to be pretty good at that weight. (Anecdotal here) There are a lot of mediocre pitchers who are in somewhere between slightly below average and above average shape.
But of course weight can be a problem long-term. The extra weight is bad for your knees, and guess what Sabathia has already had problems with? That's right, two knee surgeries already. You'd be stunned at what a little weight can do as well. Dropping from 290 to 250 would still make him overweight but his knees would probably feel a lot better.Win one for The Boss.

Re: 2012 CC Sabathia performance thread
So, he says he lost 10 to 15 pounds but that picture above looks like he lost 30 to 40. The numbers don't add up.....either that or the picture has been photoshopped.
Let the kids play.

Re: 2012 CC Sabathia performance thread
He lost weight last offseason as well only to gain it back during the season.
Hopefully he keeps it off but it's not like you can actually say his weight has ever hindered or hurt his performance in any way.
At the end of the day his play on the field is what matters.

Re: 2012 CC Sabathia performance thread
