Re: 2012 Hiroki Kuroda performance thread
How many pitches does he throw? Looks like he gave the Angels the kitchen sink in that start. Amazing.

Re: 2012 Hiroki Kuroda performance thread
I read somewhere that it wasn't that he didn't want to come to the Yankees in general, but more so that he didn't want to change teams midseason.
He apparently has a policy that he wants to finish each season staying with the team he started the season with...rather old school, but I guess it is part of his personality.

Re: 2012 Hiroki Kuroda performance thread
If this is how Kuroda pitches when he's nervous, Cashman should tell him there's a sniper in the owners box ready to take him out if he pitches poorly.

Outstanding job today.

Re: 2012 Hiroki Kuroda performance thread
Sounds like a great performance by Kuroda.
I had to DVR the game since I've been at work all day. Can't wait to watch it tonight.

Re: 2012 Hiroki Kuroda performance thread
He doesn't have overpowering stuff and he still makes it look so easy.
That's pitching.

That 92 mph moving-all-over stuff looks rather difficult to square up.

Even Kei Igawa had a good outing one time.
Small sample size. Let's see how he does.

Re: 2012 Hiroki Kuroda performance thread
His splitter wasn't good and I called it during the game. His slider kept missing off the plate to right handed hitters but his curve and both fastballs were good. I liked how he sped up following a very slow first and second innings. This is what I expect from Kuroda this year; not the end result but the way he pictched: find the pitches that are working, mix them and get guys out. Six walks in two starts isn't him however.

Re: 2012 Hiroki Kuroda performance thread
I would have let him pitch longer.
Last year Kuroda had a 3.07 ERA, a .448 winning percentage, 202 innings, and fewer hits than innings. That's the only time from 1993 to 2011 that somebody had a year with a winning percentage less than .45, an ERA less than 3.075, at least 200 innings, and fewer hits than innings.
Edit: In 2010 Kuroda had a 3.39 ERA and in 2011 he had a 3.07, but his WHIP and K/BB were better in 2010. His opponents' OPS was much better in 2010 at .642 than in 2011 at .716 due in part to his home runs allowed per inning being 56 percent in 2011 than in 2010. His extra bases hits allowed per inning was up 49 percent from 2010 to 2011. So what explains his ERA being better in 2011? His BABIP was worse in 2011 than in 2010 so it's not that. http://www.baseball-reference.com/pl...01-pitch.shtml has his statistics.

Below quote from a larger piece by Mike Mazzeo on Espn today, Good on Kuroda for his response, got the right attitude after just one start.
""As he walked toward the dugout after being pulled by Girardi, Kuroda didn’t tip his cap to the crowd before heading down into the dugout, a customary move in Japan.
“I really appreciate what the fans did, but this is only one game,” Kuroda said when asked about it by a Japanese reporter. “If this were the last game of the World Series, I would’ve tipped my hat off. We have a long road ahead of us, and I think I’m gonna save it for the best.” ""
