Re: 2012 Michael Pineda Performance Thread
Don't know what his velocity is, but this is the most I've seen of him this spring. I have avoided watching him thus far. I'll give my opinion at the end of the game. Fastball looked weak in the 1st.

Re: 2012 Michael Pineda Performance Thread
Other posters already touched on it but they can say Pineda showed up out of shape and he's not showing the same stuff as last season. They can say they want Pineda to work on different pitches. They can say the want Pineda to work on his mechanics. All of these are valid reasons that you'd have a very hard time proving otherwise.
I'd love to see the player's union try to prove that the New York Yankees are making roster decisions because they are trying to save money 5-6 years down the road.

Like this guys tempo on the mound. I hope it stays like this during the regular season. Seems to really work fast. Will be nice to get some Yankee games that move at a good pace.

Cone's making a VERY solid point on YES about his mechanics and his fastball cutting.

Re: 2012 Michael Pineda Performance Thread
Arguing over a grievance is silly. He'd never win. Teams pick players out of spring for all sorts of reasons and it often doesn't have anything to do with who performed better during ST.
Arbiter: Please explain why this young man didn't break camp for you?
Cashman: Well quite frankly we weren't as comfortable with him as we were with the other guys. We really liked what we saw out of Kuroda in Spring. He was throwing the ball really well. CC obviously is CC. Nova and Garcia threw the ball really well for us last year and we really like their presence on the team. Hughes really put it together this spring and we feel that earned that last spot.
Arbiter: OK thanks. Session over, grievance denied.Win one for The Boss.

Re: 2012 Michael Pineda Performance Thread
Precisely.
Some people were making the argument that he was trowing harder this time last year because he pitched in winter ball last year which was untrue.
Specifically after the Keith Law tweet that was confirmed by other scouts on Pineda's velocity this time last year.

Re: 2012 Michael Pineda Performance Thread
The 2-strike approach seems to need some work. Fastballs right down the middle get the gas face. Pretty clear Russel called for heat in the Ruiz and Pierre AB's, but Pineda's gotta get those off the plate.

Re: 2012 Michael Pineda Performance Thread
Pineda pitched the same or better in the second half of the season. His velocity was down a bit, but it seemed to be by design as he still hit the upper 90s his second and third time through the lineup.

Scout in stands thinks Pineda may be costing himself velocity because of his mechanics. Arm slot is off, he says.

Re: 2012 Michael Pineda Performance Thread
Cone said that he was "getting around" on the fastball instead of staying over the top of it. It creates more horizontal movement, but it can stay flat. It also takes away some velocity. He said it could be a grip issue or his arm angle is different.
Is that cash behind home plate in the white polo?
