You know, this whole minus thing is wrong, the way you guys are doing it. The classic countdown, as celebrated in military/space tradition, is usually done in negative numbers--we just don't say it most of the time. But the full form is T (for TimeZero) minus 10, T minus 9, T minus 8 until zero. Positive numbers denote times after the event (T plus 1, etc.) So for John to be using negative numbers, for time since 12/21/11, and Steve to be using positive numbers for time remaining to 12/21/12, is simply backward. You really should swap signs.
