Re: Offseason Prospect Thread
Betances's fastball isn't straight; it appears to be rising, and it sits mid 90's, topping out at 98-99. It is a plus swing and miss pitch.

Re: Offseason Prospect Thread
I know the saving grace is that really tall pitchers have a tendency to develop later because of mechanics.
But let's be real Betances is probably going to end up being a relief pitcher.
Also Betances is not a legit mid to high 90's guy can we please stop perpetuating that scouting report.

Re: Offseason Prospect Thread
I've seen Betances pitch too much and too well, to prematurely relegate him to the bullpen. He has 3 plus potentially plus pitches and is still working on his release point; Yanks are hardly thinking of him as a reliever at this point.

Re: Offseason Prospect Thread
It's probably a bit of shiny new toy syndrome with me, but I don't think it's that crazy. It's weird to say since Betances is 3 levels higher, but they have similar floors due to Betances' injury history and his command issues. If I were going to bet just on service time accrued throughout their careers, I would probably take Campos.
I would still rank Betances ahead, based on what I've read about both, just because less things have to go right for him to reach his 1 or 2 ceiling than for Campos to do the same. Hulet seems pretty convinced that he is a reliever, though.

Re: Offseason Prospect Thread
I really do like Campos, but he right now essentially has one pitch. Betances already has a changeup, and it is pretty darn good. He just needs to command his FB better, and his CB will follow. Most outings Betances is flat out dominant. I'm hoping for more 2010 than 2011 in terms of command. Also Yanks have been tinkering with him, so hopefully he makes adjustments and gets more consistent with his release point. Piliere still sees him as a starter, as do I.

I'd love to see Venditte pitch some garbage innings some day just for the novelty of it, but if you're asking for folks to guess whether or not that ever happens, I'd put my money on "no."

Per Baseball America, Yanks signed Alex Smith, an University of New Haven (Conn.) product . He signed with the Frontier League's River City club in February and then the Yankees purchased his contract. According to one source, Smith has arm strength but not a lot of polish or secondary stuff at this stage.

Betances and Banuelos pitched in today's ST game against the Phillies. I missed Banuelos but Betances was all over the place. I think MLB network is re-airing the game tonight at 7:00.

Re: Offseason Prospect Thread
Josh Norris listed minor league work groups on his blog. Interesting that Bleich is listed. Also that Suttle is not.
