Rangers Planning Shannon Stone Statue

The Rangers will honor firefighter Shannon Stone with a statue set to be unveiled next year. The statue, which is tentatively set to be named Rangers Fans, will feature Stone along with his 6-year-old son, Cooper. The two were at the game together when Shannon Stone tumbled over a Rangers Ballpark railing catching a thrown ball from Josh Hamilton and fell to his death

Wonderful idea - I hope one day his son will be able to enjoy a ballgame again. His Dad was doing the same thing millions of other fathers (and Moms) do by taking their kid(s) to experience the America's past time.

I think this is a great gesture on their part but I really hope that this Kid has someone helping him through this tough time right now. I hope his growth process and the tough time that him and his family are going through right now is not overlooked by this gesture. Again....I think its a wonderful thing that the Rangers are doing but I hope the team and MLB help this family out in some way.

I saw that on the TBS broadcast tonight. Hamilton was hugging him. It was really quite touching.

SuZann: Shortly after the accident, there was some discussion about whether foul balls should be thrown into the stands to the fans. I wrote to Josh Hamilton, and I said: “Please, don’t stop throwing those balls. Because that’s so important. That’s why daddies bring their little boys to the ballgame is for memories like that. Please don’t stop.”

We tend to forget that players tossing a baseball into the stands after the 3rd out, catching a ball near the stands, etc., is something "new". I think it became part of the goodwill package to get fans back to the game after the strike. Shannon Stone, even after having to endure that tragedy, recognizes just how important it is to fans, especially kids.

The Texas Rangers dedicated a bronze statue at the park Thursday, titled "Rangers Fans." The life-size sculpture features an image of Stone and his son Cooper walking hand in hand. Both are wearing Rangers jerseys, and Cooper Stone has a glove on his right hand.

Both Cooper and Shannon Stone's widow, Jenny, participated in Thursday's unveiling, as did Rangers president Nolan Ryan, sculptor Bruce Greene, the entire Texas roster and members of the organization.

That's a really nice gesture by texas to put up that monument..and yes i give that boy a ton of respect and credit to have the strength to go back to the park after such a tragedy.

That's a pretty cynical way of looking at it. They're not celebrating his fall or using it to encourage other fans to reach way over the railing. It celebrates the bond baseball fosters between father and son (or daughter) and memorializes a tragedy that occurred. I think it was done respectfully.

I understand what you're saying but they put the statue there after the guy fell.
Would they have erected the statue if the guy didn't fall?
