2014 FIFA World Cup Football/Soccer Thread
Okay folks,
It's time to do another FIFA World Cup thread.
Brazil is hosting their second FIFA World Cup in 2014, the fifth country to host two World Cups after Mexico, Italy, France and Germany.
Their first was 1950 that showed two key moments: the United States upsetting England 1-0 in Belo Horizonte's Estádio Independência and Uruguay's shocking 2-1 win over hosts Brazil that stunned the crowd inside Rio de Janiero's legendary Estádio do Maracanã to win the World Cup. That match was known as the Maracanazo, The Maracanã Blow.
It is the first World Cup that is staged in the Southern Hemisphere since the 1978 tournament in Argentina.
From the qualifiers that start in June 2011 to the final whistle on July 13, 2014 in the legendary Maracanã, you can talk smack about it.

2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifying: Europe (UEFA)
2014 Allocation Spots: 13
The qualification process will commence following the completion of the UEFA Euro 2012 tournament in mid-2012.
Format
Same as in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualifying phase: The teams will be split into eight groups of six teams and one group of five. The nine group winners will qualify directly to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and the eight best runners-up (determined by records against the first-, third-, fourth- and fifth-placed teams only for balance between different groups) will be drawn in two-legged play-offs to determine the other four qualifying nations.

Note:
- In consideration of the delicate political situations of the relationships between Armenia and Azerbaijan as well as between Russia and Georgia, UEFA have requested that FIFA maintain the current UEFA policy to not draw these teams into the same qualification groups. The mechanism for doing so will be confirmed by the FIFA Organising Committee on 29 July 2011 once the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking for July 2011 has been established and the respective pots for Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia and Georgia confirmed.

2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifying: Asia (AFC)
2014 Allocation Spots: 4 guaranteed places + 1 place in play-off (4 or 5 places)
The Asian Football Confederation will have four direct qualifiers for the finals tournament in addition to a further possible place via the inter-confederation play-offs against a team from another confederation - either CONCACAF's fourth-placed team, CONMEBOL's fifth-placed team or the OFC's first-placed team, to be chosen through a random draw, rather than being decided by FIFA beforehand as in previous tournaments (e.g., 2010 against a team from OFC, 2006 against a team from CONCACAF).
http://www.fifa.com/aboutfifa/federa...d=1392053.html
Format
Similar to the 2010 FIFA World Cup format
http://www.the-afc.com/en/tournament...lifiers-format
Qualification begins with two sets of two-leg knock-out qualification rounds - the first held on 29 June and 3 July 2011 and the second on 23 and 28 July - reducing the number of teams in the main draw to 20.
As in the 2010 format, the third stage consists of 5 groups of 4 teams (with matches held between September 2011 and February 2012) with the top 2 in each group advancing to 2 groups of 5 that will play a further group stage during 2012.
The top two teams in each group qualify for the 2014 finals directly, with the two third-placed teams playing-off for a chance to qualify via a further inter-confederation qualifying tie (against a team from either the OFC, CONCACAF or CONMEBOL).

The seedings determined the round of qualification that teams began competition:
Teams ranked 1–5 (the teams that competed in the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals and the interconfederation play-off) do not compete in the qualification rounds, and automatically qualify for the first group stage (drawn in Brazil in July 2011).
Teams ranked 6–27 (other teams that advanced past the first round in 2010 qualification, plus the three first round losers with the 'best' results) receive a bye to the second round of qualification.
Teams ranked 28–43 enter at the first round.

2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifying: South America (CONMEBOL)
2014 Allocation spots: 4 guaranteed places + 1 place in play-off + Brazil qualified as host nation (5 or 6 places)
The format is identical to the previous four World Cup qualification tournaments held by CONMEBOL, with all competing nations playing each other home and away in a single group.
In qualification for recent World Cup finals tournaments, the CONMEBOL nations have had four direct qualifiers, with a fifth nation competing in a play-off with a team from another confederation. The same number of spots have been retained for the 2014 tournament, despite Brazil's automatic qualification as the host nation.
http://www.peru.com/futbol/portada20...de-Brasil-2014
The fifth-placed team of CONMEBOL will compete in the inter-confederation play-offs with a team from another confederation, which will be either AFC's fifth-placed team, CONCACAF's fourth-placed team or OFC's first-placed team, to be chosen through a random draw, rather than being decided by FIFA beforehand as in previous tournaments (e.g., 2010 against a team from CONCACAF, 2006 against a team from OFC).

Qualification is scheduled to begin in August 2011 at the 2011 Pacific Games in Noumea, New Caledonia, where the men's football tournament will double as the first stage of the OFC World Cup qualifying competition. The gold, silver, and bronze medallists will advance to the second phase. These three teams will join seeded team New Zealand in a home-and-away round-robin tournament between June and October 2012, also acting as the 2012 OFC Nations Cup.

The second round winners will compete in the inter-confederation play-offs with a team from another confederation, which will be either AFC's fifth-placed team, CONCACAF's fourth-placed team or CONMEBOL's fifth-placed team, to be chosen through a random draw, rather than being decided by FIFA beforehand as in previous tournaments (e.g., 2010 against a team from AFC, 2006 against a team from CONMEBOL).

CONCACAF - First Round
Second Leg FT Scores: July 12, 2011
Saint Lucia joins Dominican Republic, U.S. Virgin Islands and Bahamas into the second round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup after a dramatic tie that ended in penalties after a gamed Aruba forced extra time.
Aruba had a 4-2 aggregate lead over Saint Lucia heading to the second leg from Castries's Mindoo Philip Park, but Jamal Joseph quickly erased that by scoring a hat trick. Joseph scored twice within the first 20 minutes to give Saint Lucia a 2-0 lead, but Frederick Gomez kept Aruba in it with a goal before halftime to give Aruba a 5-4 aggregate lead.
However, Joseph completed his hat trick in the 71st minute before Kurt Frederick gave Saint Lucia a 4-1 second leg lead 2 minutes later, but Gomez forced extra time and wiped off Saint Lucia's two away-goal advantage with his goal in the 75th minute.
No goals were scored in extra time, so penalties decided the contest.
Saint Lucia edged Aruba 5-4 in penaties. Both teams scored their first four spot kicks.
In the 5th, Pernel Williams converted his penalty while Jelano Cruden missed his sending Saint Lucia to the next round of CONCACAF qualifying.
