Re: 2011 International Free Agent Thread
BA listed the IFA signings from last year by the Yankees. This list also includes Dallas Martinez, a 17 year old pitcher from Mexico that has been compared to being similar to ManBan, but he's a righty.
New York Yankees
Top signing: 3B Miguel Andujar, Dominican Republic, $700,000.
July 2 eligible six-figure signings: RHP Moises Cedeno (Panama), SS Abiatal Avelino (Dominican Republic), RHP Luis Severino (Dominican Republic), C Alvaro Noriega (Colombia), OF Wascar Rodriguez (Dominican Republic), 3B Victor Rey (Dominican Republic), RHP Raudy Guzman (Dominican Republic).
Other six-figure signings: OF Freiter Marte (Dominican Republic), RHP Giovanny Gallegos (Mexico).

I noticed that Avelino, Severino and Rodriguez aren't listed in this year's Yankee Media Guide.New York Yankees

Re: 2011 International Free Agent Thread
Dude is 5'7". Unless he can legitimately play 2b or SS, I don't see him making the majors with us. All accounts say his defense is pretty bad.
I wish we could haz a Matt Harvey.

Per Baseball America
Cuban outfielder/third baseman Adonis Garcia may not offer prototype corner power or size, but he has a track record of hitting in his homeland. The 26-year-old batted .334/.397/.623 in 308 at-bats in 2010-11, his final season in Serie Nacional.

Re: 2011 International Free Agent Thread
I guess we need our own gritty 5'7' player, since 2nd base is taken, we might as well go for 3B.
Congratulations and thank you for number 27, Yankees !!!!!!!!!!!!!. 1 game at a time to 28. C'mon, Yankees.

Re: 2011 International Free Agent Thread
Wonder if Yanks will look into signing Paniagua again. Problem is, could be another DePaula situation where it could take another 2 years for US Consulate to approve a visa for him after falsifying documents about his age/name

Re: 2011 International Free Agent Thread
that's not really a problem if his price tag accurately reflects that. it might be a way to pack more high ceiling talent into the system under the restrictions in place.
the guy most hurt by the delay is the player himself. the team only cares about the team control years, in which the prospect would probably do better if he was a bit older anyway.always reasonable

Re: 2011 International Free Agent Thread
From Riveraveblues
Yankees pursuing Taiwanese shortstop Tzu-Wei Lin
By Mike Axisa
Via Taiwan Baseball, the Yankees are after 16-year-old Taiwanese shortstop Tzu-Wei Lin. They had originally agreed to sign him for $350k back in 2010, but the deal fell apart because he was too young to turn pro at the time. Bidding is expected to approach $2M this time around.

Assuming he signs before July 2, he would be the last IFA that can be signed without restrictions under the new rules right?

Sounds like the Cubs are going to offer a big contract to JS. The Yanks of late will most likely shy away. JMO

Re: 2011 International Free Agent Thread
Yeah, I'm not going to kill the deal or anything because I have no clue, but the details we have don't inspire much confidence that this guy is going to amount to anything.
