On an unrelated note, I have no idea why so many Sox fans have that kind of vitriol for A-Rod. You figure, if you really hate the Yankees, or even if you don't and just like for the Sox to have a competitive advantage, shouldn't you love A-Rod for drama he's causing? Shouldn't you root for A-Rod to fight the suspension and lawyer up against his own team? Don't you want him to cash in on that contract, just to hamstring the Yankees a little bit?

It's hard to identify with other Sox fans, sometimes.

But at the moment, he is still helping the Yankees win ballgames. Despite all of the drama, his bat has clearly given the Yanks a jolt. Plus he is one of the all time great Yankees.

How come nobody complains about the Red Sox "buying" championships, like they do the Yankees?

Prior to 2009, the highest payrolls to win a title in baseball history:

    2007 Red Sox, $143M
    2004 Red Sox, $125M
    2008 Phillies, $98.2M
    2000 Yankees, $92.5M
    2006 Cardinals, $88.9M
    1999 Yankees, $88.2M

    Now, through 2012:

    2009 Yankees, $201M
    2007 Red Sox, $143M
    2004 Red Sox, $125M
    2012 Giants, $117.6M
    2011 Cardinals, $105.4M
    2008 Phillies, $98.2M
    2010 Giants, $97.8M
    2000 Yankees, $92.5M
    2006 Cardinals, $88.9M
    1999 Yankees, $88.2M

One of those sluggers is still on the team. And still is a walking pharmacy. Its just that the media and most of the public have blinders on about whats going on.

They don't care because he hasn't broken any home run records, and isn't threatening to nor is he a Hall of Famer(at least he isn't in my opinion). He's more or less under the radar, like a lot of other players. Hell, the Red Sox haven't even made the postseason in four years.

If Ortiz has 50 plus home runs right now, PEDs would be brought up much more. When he retires and becomes HOF eligible, it'll be brought up again.

Short peak? Seems like it might extend into his 50s at this rate -- must be the great shape he keeps himself in.

    From 2004-2007 he hit: 41, 47, 54 and 35 HR
    he batted: .301, .300, .287, .332
    he had RBI totals: 139, 148, 137, 117
    his SLG was: .380, .397, .413, .445

    etc...

    After 2007:
one season from 2008-2012 of 30+ HR
one season from 2008-2012 of 100+ RBI
zero seasons from 2008-2012 of 90+ Runs scored
one season from 2008-2012 of an OPS over 1.000

Was he "good" after 2007? Yes. For sure, even with injuries. But has he been at his peak since 2007? No...not even with his high BA the last three years.

Even looking at WAR, which I have made no secret I don't like, but for comparison...

    1997-2003: 0.1, 0.7, -0.6, 0.7, 0.3, 1.3, 3.3
    2004-2007: 4.2, 5.3, 5.7, 6.4
    2008-2013: 1.7, 0.7, 2.8, 3.9, 3.1, 3.8

If a WAR of 5+ is All-Star quality (per b-r), then his peak was 05-07.

    yeah, that's a short peak.

Sorry to put you through all the work - I was being tongue in cheek because of his apparent age-defying rebirth. His partial year last year and his season thus far are, curiously, well in line with the peak years you listed. I guess he's found some kind of fountain of youth... or something.

He's schedule to pitch (and hit) @ the Dodgers Friday. Maybe we can trade (give) Joba to the Dodgers for a day

Dempster has been suspended for five days and fined, but he probably won't miss a start. lol SP suspensions. That whole system needs to be revamped.

As a Red Sox fan, i can't think of a better punishment for all those fans who cheered it than having to watch him pitch without missing a start.

But agreed about the system, it's been a joke for as long as i can remember.
