Just because Lester has gotten a little more demonstrative when he feels he's being squeezed doesn't mean he's adopted some kind of attitude. It may just be a guy that's been in the league for a while now who feels more comfortable jawing with the ump a little bit. I don't think it makes him much different than a lot of other veteran pitchers.

Spend enough time with Josh Beckett, and eventually you learn how to play the game the right way.

He does among my circle of peeps. I mean, I'm generally easy on the guy, but my best friend, for example, can't ................ing stand Theo and skewers him every excuse he gets. I try to remind him that, for Theo's complete inability to sign relief pitching and his big free agent ................ piles, he's pulled off some good trades and he and his team does a top notch job with drafting and development. I think if anything, the media lays off his 50/50 FA track record because of the drafting/development success and the fact that he has enough payroll to cover up a lot of his mistakes.

Then again, I'm the guy who was sure Lackey was going to have a decent year, so ................ it.

Red Sox starter Josh Beckett left today's game against the Blue Jays with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning with a sprained right ankle.

After throwing a 94-mph fastball to Brett Lawrie, Beckett walked behind the mound and catcher Jason Varitek signaled for manager Terry Francona and a trainer. After a long discussion, Beckett left the game and was favoring his right leg as he walked back to the dugout.

So - according to Abraham: Sox were going to skip Bedard's next start because of a sore left knee. Possibly start Kyle Weiland on Friday instead.

He also said Francona mentioned before today's game that they wanted to give Beckett an extra day before his next two starts...just fatigue?

The funny thing is Theo has Bill James working for him. You would think with all that baseball knowledge right by his side he would have done better with FA's.

An update...

Josh Beckett will return to Boston tomorrow to have his right ankle checked out by Dr. George Theodore, a foot specialist.

Beckett left today's game in the fourth inning. He landed awkwardly on a pitch to Brett Lawrie, tried another pitch and then left the game.

"I've never had it happen before," he said. "It's something in my ankle, I'm not sure what. I felt it on the second-to-last pitch. It felt a little bit different on the last pitch I threw. ... It was bothering me."

How did it feel?

"It felt like it was locked up and then like it popped in and out of socket or something," he said.

Beckett said he fell on the bullpen when he slipped on some concrete. But he didn't believe that had any effect on his ankle. Until he came out, Beckett was working on a shutout and had struck out six. He didn't feel anything until the fourth inning.

How concerned is he?

"I don't know," he said. "It's always concerning. That's my power leg. With the way I pitch, if you cut my leg off I don't think I can pitch."

Beckett said his ankle felt "stiff" after the game.

"I could wake up tomorrow and feel like playing basketball," he said. "We'll just see."

The Red Sox have 22 games before starting the postseason.

"It's pretty bad timing," Beckett said. "But I could be back out there in six days. We'll see. Let's not put the cart in front of the horse. Let's do our due diligence."

Hmm, interesting sounds like a little different than just twisting the ankle...guess we'll see what happens -- I think if I were a Sox fan, I'd be more worried than I was earlier today though..

Looks like Beckett may miss his next start...

Red Sox starter Josh Beckett, whose right ankle is being examined in Boston on Tuesday afternoon after he had to leave Monday's start against the Blue Jays, is almost certain to miss his next scheduled outing on Sunday, according to Sox manager Terry Francona.

"I think that's probably common sense," said Francona.

"I think he was actually doing OK, good enough to complain about going [for the exam]," said Francona.

With Beckett likely to miss Sunday and Erik Bedard being skipped on Friday to rest his sore left knee, the Sox will have John Lackey start on Friday, with rookie Kyle Weiland making a start against the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday.

I read that he was walking fine in his monogrammed cowboy boots just before he pitched. I also read that he was walking and fell right before he pitched also. I chuckled as I usually do when people fall. They said the fall had nothing to do with his ankle injury.
