    Re: The Red Sox Thread

    Some random Sox thoughts:

    1. I get taking your time and doing it right, and I get that there's no games till April, but it's a bit odd that the coaches have not been sorted out yet. I care most about the pitching coach as getting him signed up and going as early as possible seems smart.

    2. Why wouldn't the Sox go hard at Joe Saunders? They could do a lot worse at the 4th or 5th starter and it's nice to have a lefty on the staff. He's the non-tendered guy I like most.

    3. Tim Bogar should not see third base again this year. This is a skill that you just have or don't have, and he doesn't have it.

    4. Matt Albers is back. Why? His fade to bad last year didn't tell the Sox all they need to know? Why use ANY of the remaining pre-Luxury Tax budget on someone like him?

I assume they'll go with Shoppach and Lavarnway. Has Varitek actually retired? What's the deal with him?

    Shoppach and Salty.

Lavarnway either to AAA or trade bait.

Considering his performance the last few years, I'd say he has already virtually retired 2 years back.

Oops. I forgot about Salty. Yeah, I can see them trying to get something for Lavarnway

Yeah. They need pitching and a right fielder and they don't have a whole lot to trade away. Lavarnway probably has some decent value.

I think that they look at Lavarnway as having the most upside in the catcher troika, at Shoppach as a short term measure and, as a result, will be more likely to keep Lavwarnway in the organization and try to get him as much seasoning as possible in AAA this year. He's still kind of raw behind the plate.

But, yeah, he's a good trade chip too.

From WEEI: the Red Sox traded Jed Lowrie and Kyle Weiland to the Astros for Mark Melancon.

I doubt it, spare parts for a nice 7/8 inning guy depending what they do with Bard.

I like this trade from the Yankees perspective as Melancon is the kind of a pitcher that throws a lot of pitchers against hitters that are more selective like the Yankees hitters.

They definitely bought high on Melancon- one good year in a very weak division

But it's not like they gave up much, either. He should make their bullpen better.

I'm not trying to sound like a Red Sox apologist...but how do you buy high when you didn't give up anything to get him.

People do realize that Lowrie isn't a good baseball player and count be depended on cause he's alway hurt?

But Peter Gammons said he is a good baseball player...

    http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/bos...wrie-believer/

But hes a good player. Is he the greatest defensive shortstop? Hes very reliable. He makes plays. His arm is accurate. I think he sees the ball off the bat very well. Plus, he kills left-handed pitching. So, I think he becomes a very important guy"

I liked Melancon, but I'm not going to wish him good luck. Melancon won't be their closer, he just can't be. I do like this trade for the Red Sox tho, cause they gave up nothing.

My understanding is the A's weren't interested in Lowrie, or anyone else with more than 2 years of service time.
