Re: The Red Sox Thread
Cots spefically mentions a pre-exisiting elbow condition...
http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/200...n-red-sox.html2015 club option at Major League minimum salary if Lackey misses significant time with surgery for pre-existing elbow injury in 2010-14
and according to ESPN, there was definitely something recent that was the major driver in the surgery...
http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/...y-john-surgeryWhen the season ended, Lackey was sent back to Los Angeles to be examined by Yocum and had another MRI taken. After Yocum compared the two MRIs, it was decided Lackey would have the procedure.
"That (MRI) showed some additional change and based on a combination of the symptoms, the physical exam with Yocum and the new MRI, Yocum felt like it was time to consider surgery and John agreed," Cherington said

Re: The Red Sox Thread
man, Lackey needs TJS. The hits just keep coming
The real reason why the Yankees keep winning is cause the other team can't stop staring at the damn pinstripes

The Jays issued a statement Tuesday that said employees won't be permitted to leave for the same job in another organization - essentially blocking a move by Farrell back to the Red Sox.

Re: The Red Sox Thread
It's being reported that this injury falls under that clause, here and in other places:
http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/news/ar...s_bos&c_id=bosThough it's down the road and perhaps unlikely, Lackey's operation may mean that the Red Sox could end up with a relative bargain, if the right-hander comes back and proves serviceable. There's a clause in Lackey's contract that gives the Sox a team option at the Major League minimum salary for 2015 if he misses significant time with surgery for a preexisting elbow injury. As of now, Lackey and the Sox are contractually committed to each other through 2014.
The quote you posted actually supports this -- it says there's been "some additional change" in his condition -- which implies that a pre-existing condition got worse. That would certainly be within the scope of his contract clause."Welcome to NYYFans, the place where Yankees fans come together to complain about the manner in which our team is winning games" -- Mr. Coffee

Re: The Red Sox Thread
John Farrell has the John Wayne jaw thing going and he seems to be well respected by his players. But I thought his in game managing was odd this past season. I can't point to any specific examples but I recall thinking "odd move" or something else like that many times in 2011.

While taking a look at Cots I couldn't help but notice Crawford's deal. Wow! Theo was really afraid of Crawford EVER going to the Yankees. Grossly overpaid to keep him away from the Bronx and then included a clause that prevents him from going to NY if traded to another team. Great job by Cashman bluffing interest.
Carl Crawford LF
7 years/$142M (2011-17)
signed by Boston as a free agent 12/11/10 $6M signing bonus (paid in $1M increments 1/10, 5/1, 6/1, 7/1, 8/1, 9/1/10)
11:$14M, 12:$19.5M, 13:$20M, 14:$20.25M, 15:$20.5M, 16:$20.75M, 17:$21M
no-trade protection:
Crawford may block deals to two clubs
if traded, club acquiring Crawford may not subsequently trade him to NY Yankees
