He was a great player no doubt and a deserving 1st ballot HOF but I'm not sure I'd rank him as the #2 all time SS.

Though looking at the list of HOF SS and those playing who will, you might be right on #2 depending on how you view A-rod & Jeter relative to Cal.
A-Rod would be a lock at #2 if he stays at SS and would have a chance to challenge the Flying Dutchman.

Jeter is better on offense. On the other hand Cal is much better on defense.

The funny thing is that Wagner didn't become a shortstop - much less a full-time shortstop - until surprisingly late in his career. Through his age-21 season, Rodriguez had already played more games at shortstop than Wagner had through age 30.

I don't know if it's possible to compare Jeter to Wagner. Wagner gets the #1 spot in part because he was clearly perceived as the dominant player of his era (at least in the National League -- Wagner vs. Cobb in the World Series was a very big deal at the time) and because the guys who came first always maintain that air of untouchability.

But I'd take Jeter over Cal Ripken. Ripken has a couple of seasons better than Jeter's best, but the overall body of work isn't as strong as Jeter's.

    I thought this was interesting...

I think Jeter has an excellent shot for 4,000 but Pete Rose's record is going to be tough. He needs just under 700 hits for 4,000 and is coming off his 2nd best season with 216 hits.

Rose forgot to mention that if Jeter ever gets close, Rose will look into hiring a hit man to take him out. Pete really cares about that record.

LOL, Poor Jeter. He'll just get Mark Wahlberg to shoot him in the leg, in a dark tunnel, eh?

I agree with you. If Greg Maddux doesn't get 100%, it's not possible. He is the perfect Hall of Fame pitcher - tons of wins, enormously fantastic peak, extreme and successful longevity, incredible defense, loads of awards including 4 consecutive Cy Youngs, a WS championship, and likable.

The reason Jeter is not necessarily a lock for 100% is perhaps that he never won an MVP. I guarantee you that some voters will claim that's a good reason not to let him in on the first ballot, in spite of everything.

First Ballot is bullsh*t, and I hate voters who make it seem like it's more of an honor to be elected on the first ballot. Like they have a special First Ballot wing or something.

Either you are a HOFer or not. And I would want to hear the arguments as to why Maddux, or Jeter, or Rivera, or Seaver do not belong in the HOF. Forgetting about the unanimous BS and such. Why did the voter think they did not belong in the Hall?
