He actually 4 (96, 97, 01, 05), plus he had a year with a 4.02 and one with 4.05. But, really, that was only one part of my post. Comparing Andy to AJ just doesn't work. Andy's ERA+ is 117, which is 10 percent better than AJ's. And, of course, Andy's pitched more years. I have a feeling AJ's 107 is going down in the last years of his career ...

Edit: Just read your post again and noticed the AL part ... I was counting AJ's NL work.

You can when the worst part of his season was the majority of his season, can't you?

It just doesn't seem like cherrypicking to me. It would be cherrypicking, in my opinion, if a Hughes supporter overlooked Hughes' season as a whole, and said he was a definite number #2 based upon his first six starts and overlooking his run support.

But the whole point of the word cherrypicking is when you take the smallest sample size to gain evidence for your point.

The author didn't seem to be cherrypicking at all to me. He said that Hughes started the season hot, mainly due to a low BABIP, and then as the season progressed he was less effective.

I don't see how that is cherrypicking at all...

Based on Hughes' performance last season, the only person who could cherrypick would be someone who is a Hughes supporter, not someone saying he's not a legitimate top end starter.

The point is that it's silly to harp on about weird mid-season performance trends. I haven't seen anyone who "supports" Phil here cherry pick his first 6 starts as evidence.

Both of these would be cherry picking. You can't just ignore/discard data that doesn't support your argument.

IMO, We have enough options to plug the rotation hole until an acquisition, and/or farm hand are in place to perform adequately. Moreover, our bullpen and starting nine and our bench are solid. I don't want to be a pathetic 3rd or 4th place team battling with the birds, orioles and jays. There is confidence these two years will be a transition years until :

    • Manny Banuelos
    • D.J. Mitchell
    • David Phelps
    • Jeremy Bleich
    • Adam Warren
    • Brett Marshall
    • Graham Stoneburner
    • Dellin Betances
    • Andrew Brackman
    • Hector Noesi
    • Ivan Nova
    • Jairo Heredia
    • etc.
    • etc.
    • etc.
Are ready to contribute at the major league level. I count at least ten that are considered suitable candidates. There might be more. In my heart we can have another Andy Pettite, Mariano Rivera, Joba Chamberlin, or David Robertson just around the corner.

My point is that there are great generational yankees then another comes along to follow and have a high level of performance. Yes, I agree Mo is a one in an eternity type of performer and person.

I like the optimism...but not all those guys are ready to contribute at the major league level.

Many of them aren't even on the 40 man roster.

Re: Best article I've read about our rotation

I think the Yankees attempt to limit his innings by sitting him for 10 days in June didn't help either. They sat him for 10 days, he came back and stunk for 2 starts. He then had a solid start and had to sit another 11 days because of rotation change/all star break. If you are going to discount anything, i think it should be the 2 starts after each 10 day layoff which were:

    5.2 IP 6 ER
    6.0 IP 5 ER
    5.0 IP 6 ER
    5.1 IP 3 ER
