48 percent of vendors @ Yankee stadium in violation of health codes

At Yankee Stadium, 48 percent of vendors were found to be in violation of health codes. The OTL report, citing an inspection-report excerpt, said that five hot dogs registered 91 degrees in a hot-holding unit when they were supposed to be no cooler than 140. Inspectors at the Yankees' home also had a vendor dispose of a bottle of Chivas Regal whiskey containing dead fruit flies.

That sounds bad, but I doubt it really is. What it means is that 52% of the vendors had NO violations. It isn't hard to find some kind of violation if you're really looking for them. Chances are that just about everyone's home kitchen would have a few violations too if you follow the letter of the law. In my view, this isn't that big of a deal. Yes, some violations can be bad, but most of them are pretty much harmless. I think ESPN is running out of ideas for "Outside the Lines."

While it's true that a nice new facility, whether it's a restaurant, Stadium, diner, etc is a nice chance to do things nice and clean right from the start, it still comes down to the practices of the employees as to whether things like this will happen or not.

Someone can cook a hamburger or a piece of chicken totally raw and dangerous just as well in a day old oven as they can in a 20 year old oven, and make someone ill in the process. The employee needs to be clear on the health and cleanliness standards.

I probably still won't hesitate to order just about anything I want to at the ballpark, but this is a little concerning.

I can't think of the last time I got food from a vender. I like to get my food right from the stands before I go sit. Of course there is still the chance of problems there, but coming right from the grill odds are cold food isn't one of the problems.

NYC is pretty strict and a lot of these violations can be found in the average kitchen of someones house. That said, whenever I go to the stadium, or a fast food place, take this advice: Always do a special order (ask them to hold pickles, or onions , etc) that way they have to make it fresh instead of grabbing the next one on the warming lamp

Just another reason to save your cash and pack a sandwich or head up the block for a bite to eat at a reasonable price. I suggest the Court Deli or Molino Rojo. The Court Deli has a great bucket of beers deal. Twenty bucks for five beers in an ice filled bucket. Couple that with a great menu that can't be beat in the Stadium that's for sure. Don't be fooled by the imitation crap the Stadium passes off as Spanish food. Go to Molino Rojo for some cuchifritos swooshed down with some Presidentes that'll get you revved up for the game.

If this includes Hard Rock, NYY Steak, and Lobel's, then it's pretty high.

If it's just the ballgame-food vendors, then I'm shocked that it's not higher.

Violations are super easy to get, Empty paper dispenser by the sink? BLAM! VIOLATION. Dirt on the floor? BLAM! A fly buzzing near food? BLAMO!!

I'm more concerned about the meat temperatures, sharing plates between raw & cooked foods, & employees not washing their hands after using the bathroom. Those are really bad but I bet they were rare

Can they really get popped for that? If so then I'm not as worried about eating at the Trop this Friday.

The vendors work on concession & tips and are more concerned with rushing through the sale to find the next one than your health or safety (have you ever had a bag of peanuts/cracker jacks/ ice cream thrown inches above your head?); the concessionaires are hourly employees watching the clock attempting to get through their shift with the least amount of effort possible.

And unless you walk up to the hot dog vendor,l (or are on the aisle), your hot dog was likely just touched bare handed by strangers in your row (who just passed your money over.)

This is one reason among many why I don't eat their food.

I explained 3 or 4 years ago that a new Stadium wouldn't mean pleasant employees, especially food service, and a few people were quick to jump down my throat.

Yeah in NYC you get points for each violation found during an inspection, and if you go over a certain number you get shut down by the health department. But if you look up the inspection reports of restaurants, even the most respected joints get knocked for stuff like flies and empty soap dispensers

Good on the public shaming, but the letters are an eyesore. They copied the system from Los Angeles where you see those letters everywhere.

Here's the NYYsteak report (paste "nyy steak" and click "List Results" - 15 violation points):
    http://a816-restaurantinspection.nyc...archDetails.do

    NYYsteak gets a "B"

    Sanitary Violations
    1) Food item spoiled, adulterated, contaminated or cross-contaminated.
    2) Sanitized equipment or utensil, including in-use food dispensing utensil, improperly used or stored.
    3) Food contact surface not properly maintained.
