did I say I had a problem with it?

That was actually a joke; also, I've done my share of Shakespeare-babble in threads in recent days.

So being forced to read it made me frustrated because when you combine not understanding it and having no desire to understand it, the end result is wanting to claw my eyes out. My teachers were fine and when I enjoyed one of the books that were part of the curriculum class was enjoyable.
My point was that a good teacher makes the subject matter understandable, and once it is made so, the student finds that it is interesting after all. That is the case with Shakespeare. All of his plays have the same kind of drama, intrigue and universal truths found in modern literature. It sounds boring to the modern person because they don't understand how to decipher the story underneath the language used in those days. I would say that I am like you - I don't like studying what does not interest me. However, I was required to take two full semesters of Shakespeare for a degree in English Lit and I had the same attitude as you going into it. I put it off as long as I could but in the end, once the instructor helped me understand it, I found it enlightening and enjoyable. The same holds true for Chaucer, BTW.

I suppose it's possible that had I understood it better I may have hated it a little less, but honestly knowing what I knew about the plays I read (retained absolutely nothing, but I read the words ) I truly had no interest in it. No teacher was going to change that, and knowing me, I was worse in high school, Shakespeare is one of those things I'm supposed to like, cuz it's all cultural and crap, I'm going to reject it even more. It's like trying to get me to like Green Day by understanding their lyrics. I really don't give a crap what Green Day has to say so it wouldn't sway me.

This is the exact reason why I failed Algebra twice in high-school and got A-B's in everything else. It'd be nice if Shakespeare was a one time thing, instead I've had to read it in four different classes including high-school. It's agonizing.
