Re: 2010 Joba Chamberlain Performance Thread

Sicne Hughes was just named the 5th starter, the question of what happens to Joba now arises. If this organization has any sense they'll let him start the season in AAA and keep progressing as a starter, and be ready to come up as a starter when the invetiable injury to one of our 5 starters occur.

But that's not going to happen. I feel terrible for Joba. He's been jerked around by this organization for 3 years now, and because of it, now he's getting jerked around some more.

I think its a combination of both. The rumblings we've heard about the coaches being frustrated with the need to challange or re-motivate him several times during the course of the season had to play a factor in this decision.

Maybe this will be a wakeup call for Joba too.

I'm sorry, but even if he had a lazy off-season his stuff would have come around eventually.

    Let me just say this....

We've heard Cashman say that Joba is a starter. Joba is a starter. Joba is a starter.

Fine. Now that he lost the spot, for the love of God, let him go to AAA and have Nardi fix his a$$.

I would rather not use him in 2010 if it meant he will be the OLD Joba in 2011.

I'm still not convinced anyone is to blame here. I do believe (not that I know anything) that it's likely some of the loss in velocity is a residual effect of that shoulder injury in '08. He's never had the same velocity on a consistent basis since that happened. If people want to point the finger at the Yankees for tinkering with him that's fine. I'm just not convinced that's the sole cause of his problems.

IMO diminished stuff Joba won't be all that much better than Melancon out of the pen.

assuming the arm chair pitching coaches are correct and the reason for Joba's downfall is "simply" mechanics, what would indicate Nardi isn't part of the problem?

Eiland probably wouldn't be allowed to break the prized jewel, free reign. whatever was changed had to likely be approved from above him if it's lasted this long.

the organization lies/omits the truth/spins quite often in their public releases. I'm not saying it's likely, but it's not at all an impossibility they held back the truth then or found out something new since that they haven't been up front on, whether it be related to his health or something else.

there's just too much we don't know right now to make certain statements - on either end of the Joba spectrum.

If he's not sent to AAA you have to start to wonder if they have given up on him as a starting pitcher. Supposedly there are a lot of internal FO people who have been pushing JTTP since the beginning, and they may be winning the argument.

Jerking him between the pen and rotation for another year would be criminal. If they put him in the pen this year they have to leave him there, and let Ace be the 6th starter.

I think Joba will be a huge blemish on Cashmans record. The FO really is clueless when it comes to developing players.

You know what...if he completely flamed out as a starter in AAA over the first few months, then they could still have the option of putting him back into the pen. But at elast they would have given him that chance to do so.

Its a long season, they cant make everything so final, so early.

I've never seen an organization in any sport completely mishandle a player like this.

There was a pitcher in the first round of the same draft as Joba (with virtually the same talent) who was mishandled just as poorly.

I know Joba isn't 100% innocent in all of this most likely, but at this point I can't help but feel sorry for him (in a baseball context...i'd gladly get shuffled all over the place for 400k a year).
