Regardless of where you think Joba should be, you really don't want Andy in the lineup? I really don't understand that.

Re: 2010 Joba Chamberlain Performance Thread
Andy won't be as good this year as Joba, with old mechanics left intact, would have been (hell, I think current Joba would've been marginally better than Pettitte as a starter this year), and I think Hughes will be around the same as Pettitte will be this year, hopefully a little bit better. Plus, if we want to develop Joba and Phil as starters, that'll have to come at the expense of having Pettitte in the rotation as well. Tough choice, but I think it's one worth making.

joba arm hurt in texas when throwing with his old mechanics, right? isn't it possible that they changed his mechanics to prevent injury and sustain his career?

Yes thats what many-myself included have speculated on.

yep. just as well he's got a further decade plus to pitch. it would be a shame if we were one of the few clubs who could not be patience with a young pitcher.

Re: 2010 Joba Chamberlain Performance Thread
yeah, that makes no sense IMO. andy has been the quintessential gamer his entire career, and looks sharp early even tho he basically got rained out all ST. he gave up 1 run in fenway over 6 after gutting thru "survival mode" post collission for a few innings. how you could not kiss the ground for andy in this rotation is beyond me.

Or it could have been a fluke injury that would have cropped up regardless of his mechanics.

Re: 2010 Joba Chamberlain Performance Thread
Since I have already commented on the Joba thing (as in keep him in the pen) lets set this aside anyway. Don't need to rehash the same arguments. So, of the list I'd still rather have Andy than Javy. I am not throwing Javy under the bus, but he has largely been about hope, promise, rainbows and candy canes. Meanwhile Andy was a large part of our WS win last year and has proven as much as Jeter, Mo, etc., to be a big gamer. I would continue to ride that horse because he has surely earned the trust.

of course. not denying that. he'd had injuries in the past. i always suspect that in the event he'd stayed with his old mechanics and gotten hurt again; this board would be full of people calling for eiland's firing because he didn't help joba to change his mechanics.

How is he a true postseason ERA of 1.5? Thats more than double his ERA for his career....

Location is the problem, 93-95 should be sufficient

Yes, but his stuff doesn't look as good as in Boston.

Re: 2010 Joba Chamberlain Performance Thread
Same stuff. He was sitting around 93 in Boston but topped out at 96 a couple times. He was 92-93 today and hitting 95. Neither time was his FB close to the JTTP of old. Or even Rotation Joba of old, for that matter.

If he keeps pitching like this with the "injury prevention" mechanics his career is not going to last very long anyway.

u r right a setup man that throws 93-94 and once in a while hits 95 with good offspeed pitches has no chance

Re: 2010 Joba Chamberlain Performance Thread
That description could easily apply to someone like Jose Veras. Joba needs to go back to his old mechanics or work with Nardi on a completely new approach.

Re: 2010 Joba Chamberlain Performance Thread
The more and more I watch him the more and more I'm convinced they changed his mechanics and now he has trouble repeating them.
Although he was in the minors for a short period of time (90 innings). He did not have this kind of trouble repeating his delivery. Had he did, he wouldn't have put up the numbers he did.
Ditto too when he came up late 07 and 08 up until he walked off the mound in Texas.

Re: 2010 Joba Chamberlain Performance Thread
I don't want to make excuses, but given the lead and it is hard to get too into this performance. We've even seen Mariano not pitch his best when it isn't a save situation. Let me see him again in a 1-2 run game. I also expect him to be used a bit more. With a healthy lead it is hard to judge relievers too harshly.
