Why? If the problem was that the dog felt abandoned, wouldn't he have chewed the backpack straps while they were away on Sunday, rather than after they got back? I think the dog was probably happy to be left alone - he could sleep on the couch without Mark lounging around in it all day, feeling sorry for himself. A more likely explanation is that, after a day when he could return to normal, the poor dog's metabolism was disrupted again by Sandy's powerful electromagnetic field. I doubt the ASPCA considers magnetism to be animal abuse.

Or perhaps the family brought the backpacks up to Stratton with them, and afterwards all the backpacks had Jen's scent on them. In that case, any of us would have chewed them.

I am confused by "three different backpack straps." Does that mean one strap each on three different backpacks, or three different straps - which might have been on two backpacks rather than three. In either case, at least one backpack had one strap chewed but the other left untouched, and why would the dog do that?
