UEFA Euro 2012 Qualifying
Group Matchday 4 Fixtures: October 12, 2010
From UEFA.com and ESPN Soccernet
It wasn't a good day for the Home Nations.
England were held 0-0 to Montenegro despite hogging up possession. The Three Lions had only a few clear cut chances thanks to Montenegro's organized defense.
Milan Jovanovic was lucky that he didn't give England a penalty when he had a clear handball in the England attacking box.
Nevertheless, it was more frustration and agony for the Three Lions who were deservedly booed off the Wembley pitch.
Jovanovic also beat Joe Hart with his wonderstrike attempt, but it hit the cross bar.
Even the addition of Kevin Davies wasn't enough for Fabio Capello's men.
Meanwhile, despite a heroic fightback by Scotland at Hampden Park, Craig Levin's men were defeated by Spain 3-2. The Barcelona duo of David Villa and Andres Iniesta were on target for the defending European and World Cup champions giving La Furia Roja a 2-0 cushion. However, Scotland came back to draw level with goals from Steven John Naismith and a Gerard Pique own goal. But Fernando Llorente helped Spain escaped Glasgow with the three points with his goal 10 minutes from stoppage time.
Wales were soundly beaten on the road to Switzerland 4-1 thanks to a Valentin Stocker brace even though Tottenham Hotspur defender Gareth Bale equalized for the Welsh 13 minutes in.
Finally, Northern Ireland secured a 1-1 draw with Faroe Islands thanks to Rangers forward Kyle Lafferty's strike to give the North a point on the road.
Elsewhere, the most active group in this matchday is group A. The biggest shock of the day is Azerbaijian defeating Guus Hiddink's Turkey 1-0. R.F. Sadygov scored the goal that sank Turkey.
The most cracking match was in the King Baudouin in Brussels where Belgium and Austria had an exciting 4-4 draw. Jelle Vossen gave Belgium a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute, but Franz Schiemer and Marko Arnautovic gave the Austrians a 2-1 advantage. Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini drew level for the Belgians before Schiemer's second goal gave Austria a 3-2 lead. Marvin Ogumjimi drew level for Belgium again with three minutes to go before Nicolas Lombaerts thought he gave Belgium the win with his 90th minute strike. But Martin Harnik completed the 8-goal slugfest with his equalizer before the final whistle.
Ireland played pretty well against Slovakia to come away with a 1-1 draw, but could've gotten the full three points had Robbie Keane made his penalty. The Tottenham Hotspur striker had his penalty saved by Jan Mucha.
France wins another match thanks to Karim Benzema and Yoann Gourcoff.
The Netherlands thrashed Zlatan Ibrahimovic-lite Sweden 4-1 Klaas-Jan Huntellar and Ibrahim Afellay had a pair of braces.
Russia, Slovenia, Greece, Portugal, Denmark and Czech Republic also join the winners list.
The only sour note in today's matchday is the match beween Italy and Serbia abandoned when Serbia fans threw fireworks and flares onto the Genoa pitch seven minutes into the match.
Iceland 1-3 Portugal
France 2-0 Luxembourg
England 0-0 Montenegro
Scotland 2-3 Spain
Belgium 4-4 Austria
Greece 2-1 Israel
Slovakia 1-1 Republic of Ireland
Macedonia 0-1 Russia
Estonia 0-1 Slovenia
San Marino 0-2 Moldova
Netherlands 4-1 Sweden
Switzerland 4-1 Wales
Denmark 2-0 Cyprus
Liechtenstein 0-2 Czech Republic
Belarus 2-0 Albania
Kazakhstan 0-3 Germany
Latvia 1-1 Georgia
Finland 1-2 Hungary
Azerbaijan 1-0 Turkey
Armenia 4-0 Andorra

UEFA will award Italy an automatic 3-0 win thanks to the Serbian fans throwing flares.

That's because Belgium thrashed Azerbaijan in Brussels 4-1.
Jan Vertonghen, Timmy Simons, Nacer Chadli and Jelle Vossen found the back of the net for the UEFA Euro 1980 runners-up.
Group C
Konstantin Vassiljev equalized in the snow for Estonia as they denied Serbia a win in a 1-1 draw.
Serbia must be kicking themselves after being wasteful despite Ajax Amsterdam forward Marko Pantelic drawing first blood for Beli Orlovi.
Meanwhile, Slovenia had a hard fought goalless draw in Belfast against Northern Ireland.
That's good news for Italy as they go five points clear on both Slovenia and Serbia with a game in hand with 13 points in Group C.
Group D
Fiorentina striker Adrian Mutu kept Romania's UEFA European qualification play-off chances alive with a 3-1 win over Luxembourg.
Mutu bagged a brace.
Luxembourg can't mathematically win Group D.
Group E
The most exciting and craziest game in this set of UEFA Euro qualifiers took place at Amsterdam Arena as UEFA Euro 1988 winners the Netherlands maintained their 100% record and move another step closer to the UEFA Euro 2012 finals with a pulsating 5-3 win over Hungary.
Robin Van Persie gave the Oranje a 1-0 halftime lead in the 13th minute. However at the 46th minute, the Arsenal striker left the game after picking up a knock. Former PSV Eindhoven, Manchester United and Real Madrid and current Hamburg striker Ruud van Nistelrooy took his place.
However, Hungary scored two quick strikes in four minutes with Gergely Rudolph scoring in the 46th minute and four minutes later, Fulham midfielder Zoltan Gera gave the former two-time FIFA World Cup runners-up a 2-1 lead.
Inter Milan dynamo midfielder Wesley Sneijder tied the game 2-2 in the 60th minute before van Nistelrooy gave Bert van Marwijk's men a 3-2 lead in the 72nd minute.
But Hungary never gave up. Gera scored his second goal of the game in the 75th minute to make it 3-3.
Still, the Netherlands showed they have more weapons as Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt bagged a late double in the 78th and 81st minute to give Holland another win and move 9 points clear of Hungary and Sweden for first place in Group E at 18 points.
Speaking of the Swedes, the Blagult leapfrogged Hungary for second place in Group E via goal differential with a 2-1 victory over Moldova at the Rasunda Stadium. Mikael Lustig and Birmingham City midfielder Sebastian Larsson scored the goals for the former UEFA Euro 1992 Top 4 finishers.

Israel kept their UEFA Euro 2012 hopes alive after edging Georgia 1-0.
Tal Ben Haim, no relation to the defender, scored the only goal of the game.

Re: UEFA Euro 2012 Thread
I have tons of beef with England and how they're running their mix of youth and senior ranks.
I think the FA is making mistakes on their youth by simply not giving them a chance to participate and at times win youth tournaments (i.e. the UEFA U-21 European Championship) and when they have the talent and have quality fringe players who can be role players, the senior ranks wasted them in terms of callups.
Look at Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, France, they're not afraid to rotate and give youth players caps. Same thing with the likes of Brazil, Argentina, Ghana, the United States, Mexico and Australia, they're giving their youth players a chance at the senior level.
And they waited way too long to build and almost complete their National Football Centre in Burton upon Trent, St George's Park.
Look at France with Clairefontaine or Spain with La Ciudad del Futbol, they're producing a lot of great young talent year-in and year-out.
Finally, Germany, Italy, Holland, Spain, France, they know how to play as one cohesive unit while England doesn't.It's not the 27 World Championships that drive the New York Yankees. It's the 28th.
Every year is The Year. Go Yankees.

Re: UEFA Euro 2012 Thread
the FA is full of old farts that dont like change and have the attitude "we invented the game so we cant be wrong and wont learn from johnny foreigner".......
this showed in the early World Cups where England didnt send a team out of arrogance even tho they probably wuda won a few more World Cups!
sometimes its better to watch the under 21s as the talent is there but then you come to the senior side and the 'established' players always get a game even if thye are rubbish!
aaaaah what can you do?
