UEFA Euro 2012 Thread
Okay football (soccer) fans,
It's time for another UEFA European Football Tournament.
It's UEFA Euro 2012 taking place in Poland and Ukraine.
From the opening round draws on February 7, 2010 to the final whistle on July 1, 2012, you can talk smack about it.
It is also the last time that the UEFA European Football Tournament will have sixteen teams competing because in UEFA Euro 2016, the competition will expand to a field of 24.

Qualifying draw details via ESPN Soccernet Live Chat:
10:49
Dale Johnson:
Right, a quick overview of how qualification works. Basically, 16 teams will be in Poland and Ukraine - the hosts of course being two of them. There will be nine qualifying groups, made up of the 51 eligible European nations. The group winners qualify automatically, as does the best runner-up. The other eight runners-up have a two-legged play-off - as was the case for the World Cup - to take the last four places.
Sunday February 7, 2010 10:49 Dale Johnson
10:50
Dale Johnson:
There will be six groups of six nations, and three groups of five nations. This of course means there has to be a fair rule to pick out the best runner-up. For the groups with six nations, the results against the team which finishes bottom will be ignored, so all runners-up will be judged on eight matches.
10:51
Dale Johnson:
One small point about the draw, Buried in the rules of the draw procedure is a mandate from UEFA that Russia, in pot one, and Georgia, in pot 5, must be kept apart. UEFA really fear serious trouble if they were to face each other so they have gone against their usual policy with this, they normally ignore political reasoning.It's not the 27 World Championships that drive the New York Yankees. It's the 28th.

Re: UEFA Euro 2012 Thread
Not the easiest of the Groups but I'd be surprised if England failed to top it at the end of the qualifying games.

Group Stages
From UEFA.com
The road to Poland/Ukraine for Euro 2012 starts on September 2 for the rest of the teams.
There are a total of nine groups. Six of these groups have six teams (one each from pots 1 to 6 below); the remaining three groups consist of five teams (one each from pots 1 to 5 below). At the conclusion of qualifying, the team at the top of each group will qualify automatically. The second-placed team with the most points from games versus the first-, third-, fourth- and fifth-placed teams will qualify also. The remaining eight second-placed teams will contest two-legged playoffs for the right to join them.
Qualifying Group Stage Tiebreakers
If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings.

2. Superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question
3. Higher number of goals scored in the group matches played among the teams in question
4. Higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question

From UEFA.com
The following 18 dates are reserved for group matches in qualifying:
* 3/4 and 7 September 2010
* 8/9 and 12 October 2010
* 25/26 and 29 March 2011
* 3/4 and 7 June 2011
* 2/3 and 6 September 2011
* 7/8 and 11 October 2011
For the first time, Tuesday evenings replace Wednesday evenings for midweek qualifying fixtures where two matchdays occur in the same week. This is in order to allow players an extra day to return to their clubs for domestic duty the following week. Consequently, teams are permitted to move the earlier weekend match forward to the Friday evening. Where matches are scheduled for a Friday evening, there remains a possibility that the fixture will actually be played on the Saturday.It's not the 27 World Championships that drive the New York Yankees.
