Walkoff Magic
Coming off this incredible season of walkoff wins, I am trying to gather a list of the greatest Yankee walkoff victories of all time. The one that made Derek Jeter Mr. November following Tino's dramatic game-tying blast in the 2001 World Series comes to mind, as does the one Bernie hit off Randy Myers in the Jeffrey Maier game in 1996. Anyone got any favorites they want to share?
They don't have to be postseason.
Just post them here, or pm me. Thanks.

Re: Walkoff Magic
In 1976, Chris Chambliss hit a walk off HR in the bottom of the 9th inning against the Kansas City Royals in the ALDS to put the Yankees into the World Series for the first time since 1964.

Re: Walkoff Magic
Good job.
Aaron Boone in 2003 too.
Jimmy Leyritz won our first playoff game in 14 years in the 1995 ALDS too.
Thanks.
Surely there are more.

Bernie also hit another walk off in the '99 ALCS against the Red Sox off Rod Beck.

Until one of the Yankees hits a walk off that wins the WS (could this be the year?), I'll have to say that the Chambliss HR in '76 will remain my favorite. Boone second.

Re: Walkoff Magic
Boone has to be my favorite. Wasn't alive for Chambliss, so I'll go with Jeter in the 2001 WS as my 2nd favorite.

Re: Walkoff Magic
Great stuff. Thanks.
There were some nice regular walkoffs before the winning returned in 1995 too. Mel Hall had one in a Memorial Day game against the Red Sox in the early nineties, and the longest game I have ever attended, on September 11, 1989, was ended on a two-run Claudell Washington home run in the bottom of the 18th where the Tigers had taken the lead in the top half. Giambi won that rain-soaked one in 13 innings in his first Yankee year with a grand slam too.
Years before that there was one I am looking for (believe it or not, I'm not SURE it was by a Yankee) where the walkoff was an inside the park home run. I can't imagine a more exciting play than that.

Re: Walkoff Magic
How about the walk-off straight steal of home? I saw one of those (George Brett vs. Cleveland, Aug. 17, 1976). There hasn't been one in the major leagues since 1982.

You have links on these, and the pitching numbers, you're willing to share? I would appreciate it.

Re: Walkoff Magic
I hear ya, ram. The steal of home was much more common back in the deadball days. Still, I have to think a walkoff (runoff) inside the parker, because of the time you have to watch it unfold and to cheer, would have to be the most exciting play.

Re: Walkoff Magic
People forget that Chambliss had two memorable wak offs in 1976.
With the Yankees down by two runs with two outs Chris hit a three run "Walk off" on the first pitch off Tom House to beat the Red Sox in July of 1976.
I was actually thinking of that HR when Chris came up in the ninth inning against KC.Last edited by ymike673; 10-06-09 at 12:50 PM.

Re: Walkoff Magic
Here is an odd one for you. In 1975 the Yankees played a game at Shea Stadium against the Twins that was suspended because of rain after 11 innings. The game had to be finished in Minnesota but the Yankees were still the home team in that game. The Twins scored a run in the top of the 12th but the Yankees got 2 in the bottom of the inning to win the game. So the Yankees had a "Walk Off" win in Minnesota!

On Sept.20,1974 Bobby Murcer tripled off Gaylord Perry of the Indians in the ninth inning at Shea Stadium driving in Elliot Maddox to win the game.

Re: Walkoff Magic
Yes, that is sad. That series against the Indians back in 1974 also produced Murcer's first home run at Shea Stadium that season. I am one of the few people who attended every Yankees home game the two years they played at Shea.

Re: Walkoff Magic
Which former Yankee player hit a walk-off home run as their first career home run -- a home run that would turn out to be the only walk-off home run in his career? I also believe that hit would also be the only extra-base, walk-off hit, they would ever have.
