Pedro passes physical; expected to sign with Phils
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/0...cted-soon.htmlPedro Martinez passed his physical with the Phillies and is expected to sign a deal with the defending World Champions soon, according to Yahoo's Gordon Edes.
Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. had no comment on Edes' report, according to Andy Martino.

Re: Pedro passes physical; expected to sign with Phils
He looked damned good during the WBC. Makes me wonder if that'll carry over and what kind of impact he'll have not only on that team, but also in that division. One half of the season.....if he stays healthy, Philly will have a hell of a rotation, and it was already good before Martinez.

And just think about it'll be if Halladay signs there too.

I read that Philly is Halladay's first choice to play.Still and will always be a New England Patriots fan.

No lose situation. Veteran pitchers for next to nothing.....we have Sergio Mitre.

Eh, not a bad risk for little money, but I don't expect a whole lot out of Pedro at this point.

Re: Pedro passes physical; expected to sign with Phils
Cashman probably shouldve given him a longer look than he did. Im no fan of Pedro, but the yankees needed another starter and he was out there. If he comes back and is throwing 90-93 again then I will be really upset with Cashman.
If you listen to the fans you’ll be sitting with them soon enough.- Brian Cashman

He signs with the Phils, and they have immediately placed him on the DL.

Well yeah, that's so he can make some tune-up starts in the minors. Otherwise, he would have had to clear waivers to be sent down. That, or sign a minor league contract.

Great "why the hell not?" signing for the Phils. If they land Roy, look out.

I guess this is what passes for 'in shape' in Philly.

Lower arm slot, lower velocity, just got off the DL. Sounds like a great catch.

Re: Pedro passes physical; expected to sign with Phils
For a million bucks, I guess Pedro's worth a shot. He probably hopes to show the Mets they screwed up in the process.
I've always thought Pedro was older than his "MLB" date of birth - actually closer to 40 now. Just a hunch.

I have a feeling that he'll get hit hard in that Philly stadium and will have a hard time going five innings.

would have made sense to make him take Wang's spot but we need only a temp solution
The real reason why the Yankees keep winning is cause the other team can't stop staring at the damn pinstripes

As much as it hurts to say it, I'm with you. I'll be rooting for him the entire way, though. He still might have one of the best changeups in the league, let's just see if he can top 87 on the fastball. Hell, if he gets his control back he might not need more than 87.

Re: Pedro passes physical; expected to sign with Phils
He may not be able to fire aspirin tablets anymore, but he hasn't lost a thing off his attitude:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/16/sp...tml?ref=sports
Bob Gibson says hello.“I totally understand the business side of baseball,” said Martinez, who can earn an additional $1.5 million in incentives. “As dirty as it is, I respect it.
“I’ve got nothing to say but ‘God bless them,’ ” Martinez said of the Mets as he went on and on about them. “I wish them well. I hope that they all get healthy and come back to compete.”
This raised the suspicion of one reporter who wondered whether Martinez could truly be a Phillie if he did not hate the Mets, or at least the Mets’ fans. The reporter did everything but demand a loyalty test, telling Martinez that she wanted to be sure he would be “wearing the right hat” when he pitched against the Mets.
“Don’t confuse that now,” Martinez gently scolded with humor. “It could be my mom standing up there with the bat. If I have to back her up. ... ”

If Pedro is as strong as we was in the WBC he should be fine and an absolute bargain at $2.5M.

Here comes Pedro. He passed his physical, so you know he can pitch. And he immediately went on the DL because he can't pitch. Wait, what?

Re: Pedro passes physical; expected to sign with Phils
I think it has something to do with the fact that he never went to ST, and they want to give him a chance to get into shape by sending him to the DL.
