Report: Josh McDaniels named Broncos head coach

    http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/...ls-to-broncos/

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that the Denver Broncos and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels have reached an agreement that will make the 32-year-old offensive whiz the new head coach of the Broncos.

Per Mortensen, an official announcement is expected to be made on Monday.

The Denver Post reported on Friday night that the Broncos had narrowed the field of candidates to five, and that an offer could be made over the weekend. The report mysteriously disappeared by Saturday morning.

In the end, the report was on the money.

The decision apparently came down to McDaniels and Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazer. Other finalists were Cowboys offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels Jason Garrett, Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, and Bucs defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.

I'm certainly okay with teams taking away the Pats coordinators. The Denver job is certainly a good one given that they do have a good, young QB to work around.

Good for him. Having Brandon Marshall and Jay Cutler in a weak division should definitely ease his transition to HC.

I hope Josh takes Dean Pees with him.

    Take Dean Pees, please!

I'm surprised the Broncos didn't go with a Defense-first coach, but that's a nice job for McDaniels who gets to go to a team with a great young QB and a great set of young WR's as well.

Adam Schefter reports that Josh will hire Mike Nolan as his DC.

Josh got criticized for SB 42, but getting held to 14 points was more a credit to the Giants defense. Moreover, after getting shutout in the 1st half, he made the necessary adjustments that yielded 14 points in the 2nd half and a 4-point lead with 2:17 left.

As for the Pats D in SB 42, where are the offers for Dean Pees? Hmmm?

Good luck, Josh. You've earned this! Not only did you get a HC job, but you nailed the best job available! Jets, Browns, Lions, and you get the Broncos.

Josh's biggest challenge will be getting Cutler to buy into his system. Cutler looked like Favre, Jr. with his penchant for INTs. Josh won't put up with that. If Cutler doesn't respond or cops a 'tude then Josh will have to bench him. I hope Bowlen understands this.

The fact that the Patriots are still good-to-excellent every year even though just about every coordinator Belichick has had in New England gets their own head coaching job elsewhere shows either A) how great a coach Belichick is or B)how useless coordinators are.

    That's true of the offense.

The Defense has been in sharp decline since Crennel left.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the combination of the aging at linebacker and the injury/cutting of Ty Law after 2004. Doesn't seem like we've had the same depth at CB since he left.

The defense has gotten older, and lost it's two prime playmakers that weren't old.

Why has the defense gotten older?

The reason is the team's stubbornness to cling to their system. So many talented defensive players have been passed over in the draft b/c they didn't fit the system. That's why Tedy Bruschi continues to be the strong ILB beyond his prime years.

The Pats D was terrible BEFORE the injuries. Harrison was old heading into the season and Adailus Thomas has been misused by Pees since the team spent big money to get him.

It's this same institutional philosophy that allowed Asante Samuel to walk, while continuing to pay Richard Seymour top dollar. Imagine the Pats w/o Ty Law for the early half of this decade? Would the Pats have won 3 SBs? Had BB been around when Law's rookie deal was up, Law would have went bye-bye.

Pees constantly had Adalius Thomas out on pass coverage when his best skill set was getting to the QB. Look at all the successful playoff teams over the last several years, they've all had a terrific pass rush. The Cardinals are playing this late into January b/c they have been getting to the QBs in the playoffs: 5 sacks; 4 INTs. When your DC doesn't like to blitz, can't scheme an effective pass rush on passing downs, and is on a team that won't pay big money to DBs, is it any wonder that the Pats pass defense sucks?

It will now be 5 years since the Pats won their last SB. That's a 1/2 of a decade. Brady? Cassel? It won't matter if the Pats can't fix thier pass D.
