San Diego has decided not to offer Trever Hoffman a contract
Very strange situation.
http://www.rotoworld.com/content/Hea...=MLB&hl=251906The Padres on Monday withdrew the $4 million offer they made to free agent Trevor Hoffman.
The Padres are looking embarrassingly poor at this point. To offer the all-time saves leader such a paltry amount and then pull it off the table after only a few days is pretty ridiculous. Hoffman just might end his career elsewhere. If so, Cleveland would seem to be a strong possibility, with Milwaukee and St. Louis also potentially in the running.

Re: San Diego has decided not to offer Trever Hoffman a contract
The Yankees should sign him and use him in mop-up so Mo can pass him.
"We understand that John Henry must be embarrassed, frustrated and disappointed by his failure in this transaction. Unlike the Yankees, he chose not to go the extra distance for his fans in Boston."

I'd use him in mop-up simply because he stinks in a big spot. For one of the top closers ever, he's not much better than Armando Benitez in a big spot.

He'd make better sense for the Mets

The problem with Hoffman is you're restricted to one inning or less appearances for him and with the Mets bullpen being such a mess, you really need a stud as closer that can pitch more than one inning if necessary.

Hoffman is the epitome of a compiler.

Based on his performance the final weekend of 2007, he'd be a perfect Met!

Hoffman's peripherals were all pretty good last year at age 40. I wouldn't mind giving him a chance as a 7th inning/set up guy behind Okie and Papelbon. Then again, maybe the Sox don't need a right handed Okajima in the same bullpen as the left handed one.

For everyone who says he's a compiler and sucks, he still has the best all-time save percentage. Yes, better than Mo.

He'd still have one, though. I don't get it.

Re: San Diego has decided not to offer Trever Hoffman a contract
Saves are highly overrated. How many of those situations are for one inning, with a 3 run lead? How many times has he come in for more than 3 outs with a 1 run lead? No one will ever convince me that Hoffman is or was better than Mo.

I agree Trevor is no Mo, but he has had a hell of a Hall of Fame career. It was his misfortune to have played in SD where he didn't have the pressure and media attention Mo had

I hope K-Rod is crying somewhere.

Hoffman being available shouldn't change a thing to the teams who were genuinely interested in K-rod.

I don't know who is going to give K-Rod the massive money he wants.

It's one less suitor. A lot of team that are looking for a closer would probably prefer a short term commitment.

He'll end up settling for slightly more than what Cordero got last year. He'll get 4 years and under $60M.

Re: San Diego has decided not to offer Trever Hoffman a contract
A team that would sign Hoffman was a team that was looking at a Brandon Lyon as a potential closer for them, not one of the big guns.

How do you know? This would make a lot of sense for some of the "big guns."
