Airplane crash off Spain to Canary Islands, at least 45 killed

Very unfortunate news. 178 passengers in all, the plane supposedly swerved upon takeoff. Hopefully, no more deaths than this, but nytimes.com had a link.

Now more than 100 dead. That's pretty bad.

Apparently there was an aborted takeoff immediately prior to this fatal attempt. Whoever told the pilot to go ahead and try again is in a lot of trouble. What a tragedy.

    Wow...

Spanair flight JK5022, an MD-80, ran off the runway Wednesday shortly after taking off for Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. Witnesses told Sky News that the plane's left engine caught fire during take-off, causing the aircraft to crash to the ground and break into two pieces.

There were 173 people on board.

Seeing the pictures, I'm amazed there are survivors.

That is just awful. I hate reading about stuff like this.

Thousands of flights are going on around the clock all the time, and despite the occasional disaster like this it's still very safe. Still, if I was flying today I'd be a bit uneasy.

No way! This is the best time to fly - what are the chances of two crashes in the same day?

How terrible. I think they are up to 150 deaths now.

There was a much deadlier crash involving two 747s in 1977 that killed nearly 600, and this was in the Canary Islands. That one had me wondering aloud about airplane safety.
