I have lived in Astoria all my life (almost 60 years). Some sections of it were bad then, and they are bad now - however, the vast majority of the area was always relatively safe.

I live there now, and as I mentioned in another post I have lived here for almost 60 years. It was never a wreck, except for certain sections that were always bad and still are. You are correct - If I was not already living here I could not afford to. It's a great neighborhood.
