    I lived in Astoria, Queens for about a year when I was 6 (1993) and my parents didn't allow me to attend class until after we moved to NJ. I can't remember all too much, but I do remember that particular area of Queens being an utter mess.
    I have lived in Astoria all my life (almost 60 years). Some sections of it were bad then, and they are bad now - however, the vast majority of the area was always relatively safe.

    I live there now, and as I mentioned in another post I have lived here for almost 60 years. It was never a wreck, except for certain sections that were always bad and still are. You are correct - If I was not already living here I could not afford to. It's a great neighborhood.
