I was kind of amused in the first inning when he gave Bobby Abreu credit for getting "a good read" and "taking a chance" on A-Rod's bloop single and advancing from first to third. There were 2 out.

Seriously, it's not that I don't want "my" announcers saying bad about The Yankees when they play bad. I'm right there with them. (John Sterling regularly kills The Yankees when they play poorly - which is all too often lately and I agree wholeheartedly with him.) I also appreciate when and understand when they point out good plays, etc. from the opponents. I'm not into propaganda. But in the first game - Cone went on and on about how good that win was for The Mets, really as if he were broadcasting for SNY. I would have preferred he concentrate on how awful The Yankees were than give a 5 minute pep talk about how this game will elevate The Mets' confidence and be great for Jerry Manuel.

Last week in Pittsburgh there was a shot of the bridge, and there was a couple talking on the bridge. And suddenly, at the end of their commenting on that shot, Coney goes, "Don't jump!"

And I wish I could remember, but last night against Oakland he made some hint about the great parties during the All-Star festivities. I wish I could remember exactly what he said, but the way he said it was in that same tone of voice, and almost suggestive.

Kenny laughed, then Connie said something about the night life and Kenny replied, "There's always night life in New York."

Yeah, that was more or less it. But it was more in the way he said it, like, "There were some GREAT PARTIES TOO", as though he was recalling from first-hand experience. You could just feel him grinning meniacally when Kenny responded -- felt very 1980's Cone.

Another thing about Cone - and Leiter - they let their passion show through. When someone does a nice job of pitching or hitting - you can hear the approval, admiration, and passion in their voices. I love that! Other announcers, like Kay and Singleton, convey the excitment of a homerun or strikeout or run scored almost for us. Cone is enjoying it himself.

His passion is genuine. But he speaks in such a "Whoa, dude!" way. Almost everything he describes is done with this guttural inflection:

"Singy, look at the spin on that pitch. So tigggght!"
"Singy, look at the way Giambi doooove for that ball. What grrrrreat effort!"
"Singy, look at the way Matsui drrrrives the bat through the hitting zone!"
"Singy, I've never seen anyone grrrrrab the sunflower seeds with that much paaaassion!"

It's almost comical.
