Re: The David Cone said what? Thread
I want to slay David Cone right now. He sounds like he's working in the Met front office, talking about how good this game is for The Mets, in great detail. This is the YES Network - we don't care about how good our the utter self-humiliation of The Yankees is good for The Mets. I am just beside myself over this hideous performance right now, I don't need to hear David Cone shilling for The Mets!

I got it, you don't want your announcers saying anything bad about the Yankees nor anything good about their opposition.

I was kind of amused in the first inning when he gave Bobby Abreu credit for getting "a good read" and "taking a chance" on A-Rod's bloop single and advancing from first to third. There were 2 out.

Basically!

(John Sterling regularly kills The Yankees when they play poorly - which is all too often lately and I agree wholeheartedly with him.) I also appreciate when and understand when they point out good plays, etc. from the opponents. I'm not into propaganda. But in the first game - Cone went on and on about how good that win was for The Mets, really as if he were broadcasting for SNY. I would have preferred he concentrate on how awful The Yankees were than give a 5 minute pep talk about how this game will elevate The Mets' confidence and be great for Jerry Manuel.

Kay told Coney that he and Giambi would make a good pair. Coney sez: "I'd have to pull the "Just For Men" out of his pocket".

We're in the third inning and he's already got two more entries:
#1:
Kay: talking about broadcasting team at SNY and how Gary Cohen makes the suit/ties or polo shirts.
Kay: "Over 80, Cohen says shirts and ties are out."
camera shows Cohen and Keith Hernandez in their polo shirts.
Cone: "The camera just showed Keith Hernandez...if it was up to him, he'd take his shirt off right now if he could and do the show bare chested."

#2
Cone: "Ponson sporting his shades - the life of a starting pitcher..work once a week"
Singleton: "life of a starting pitcher..let's see, tuesday- massage, wednesday - play some golf - thursday, maybe take in a museum, friday, i'll pitch
Kay: "oh yeah, the museum sounds right"
they all laugh
Cone: "some of us get our culture in different ways". "there's a culture day in there somewhere".

Twice today he said the pitcher would "variate" his pitches or location...
Uhh, Coney, I think the word is "vary"....Anonymous internet thread posters say the darndest things.

Re: The David Cone said what? Thread
Last week in Pittsburgh there was a shot of the bridge, and there was a couple talking on the bridge. And suddenly, at the end of their commenting on that shot, Coney goes, "Don't jump!"
And I wish I could remember, but last night against Oakland he made some hint about the great parties during the All-Star festivities. I wish I could remember exactly what he said, but the way he said it was in that same tone of voice, and almost suggestive.

About the All Star parties, Kenny was talking about how amazing the AS game was, and all the great things that were done with the retired vets and Connie said something like, "There were some great parties too." Kenny laughed, then Connie said something about the night life and Kenny replied, "There's always night life in New York."

Re: The David Cone said what? Thread
Yeah, that was more or less it. But it was more in the way he said it, like, "There were some GREAT PARTIES TOO", as though he was recalling from first-hand experience. You could just feel him grinning meniacally when Kenny responded -- felt very 1980's Cone.

Yeah. I liked how Kenny had to think about it too, like, I was something deep and now we're talking about parties? Hehe.

His passion is genuine. But he speaks in such a "Whoa, dude!" way. Almost everything he describes is done with this guttural inflection:

"Singy, look at the way Matsui drrrrives the bat through the hitting zone!"
"Singy, I've never seen anyone grrrrrab the sunflower seeds with that much paaaassion!"
It's almost comical.

Singleton: "Sidney Ponson spent the All-Star break in his native Aruba." Cone: "Yeah, and he got back safe, too!"

Cone went on to say he thought Sir Sid "had a little Boomer in him."

"Variate" is Coney's favorite non-word. He uses it frequently.
