Would anyone like to be discussing ARod in this thread sooner than later?

I thought seriously about posting in this thread when the news broke yesterday.

Count me among those hoping the A-Rod era in New York is over.

Not necessarily. Even if the Yankees can't get themselves out of the contract, an Albert Belle scenario is not only possible but quite likely. Maybe he hasn't played his last game in pinstripes yet, but there's strong reason to doubt that he'll be able to play in 2017.

Nick Johnson's elite skill set would have easily made him into one of the best players in the game. At least he had that one year.

I don't know if I'd go that far, but I think he'd have been awfully similar to John Olerud.

Or Kevin Youkilis. Slowfooted guy with a good eye, nice gap to gap power and competent glove at 1B.

For some strange reason, what most sticks in my mind about him was a very bad AB he put up in a crucial spot in the 2002 ALDS. But I definitely liked him overall.

What sticks out about the 2002 ALDS was NYY pitching looking like batting practice. I had nothing against Nick expect his inability to stay on the field.

The Indians are close to finalizing a minor league deal with former Rockies slugger Jason Giambi, reports Troy Renck of the Denver Post (via Twitter). The contract will include an invitation to MLB Spring Training.

Giambi, 41, will look to compete for a spot on the bench as a left-handed designated hitter and offer depth at first base. The 2000 AL MVP posted a .225/.372/.303 batting line in 89 at-bats with the Rockies in 2012 as he served as a pinch hitter.

I know Jason Giambi is always going to be linked to the juice...but the guy still has an amazing eye...even last year, he still had a .372 OBP in limited action. Some guys just know how to get on base.

Miguel Cairo had a 17-year major-league career. That's kind of amazing.

According to B-R, he made a bit over $9.5 million playing baseball. You've got to figure he's pretty happy with the way things worked out for him

I know that I'd like to work for the next 17 years and make 9.5 million....
