Re: The Ask anything about computers thread
My laptop has an HDMI connection but my TV doesn't. However, both the TV and laptop have VGA/monitor connections although my laptop has a "female" connection and the TV has a "male" connection with the pins.

I usually don't trust what the Best Buy guys tell me because they tend to be wrong more times than not. Then again, I don't know much myself.
The male/female VGA monitor cable is only $15 while everything else costs a small fortune.
My laptop and TV both have S-video connections but they're not the same. One uses four prongs (or whatever you call them) and the other seven. I don't think that would work.

Okay, I'm a jack*ss. My TV also has an HDMI connection. It's on the back of the TV underneath all of the other connections, and I didn't even know it was there. Doh!

Go to the help menu and choose check for updates. That'll show if you're on the latest version.

FF just shuts down. I saw an error message twice that said it was having problems and that I could either quit or restart firefox.

Re: The Ask anything about computers thread
I need a new computer for our main household computer. Need to do the books on it for our small business, as well as maintain our small website. The kid needs it for school projects. Need it for the internet. Need it for playing the occasional game. Need it for e-mail. General computing purposes. Watch a movie now and then. Burn a CD.
Stuff like that.
We have 3 small ordinary pc's spread through the house, used mostly for the internet. Connected (wirelessly) to our current older pc's cable modem.
Looking for a relatively powerful/fast computer.
Is there any reason why I should buy a PC instead of a MAC?I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart

The pin out connection you have on your TV might be a DVI adapter and not a VGA.

Re: The Ask anything about computers thread
Price. You can get a PC for what you want to do fairly cheap compared to the lowest IMAC. Which would work as well.

I see that after a bit of research.

Re: The Ask anything about computers thread
Sounds like for what you want Id go with a gateway or HP, Ive had some good luck with hp support in the past but some friends have not been so lucky, whatever you get get an extended warranty, my dad has been sold on gateway lately as the last two he bought were that and hadn't had any problems, Im leaning to the mac side of the fense myself, but I have 4 computers already an hp media center pc which I custom built, an imac an hp laptop 17" and im working on a macbook pro, I have an ibm think pad for work.

I had good service from HP when my laptop was still under the manufacturer's warranty. They were very helpful on the phone and sent me a new hard drive when it was determined mine was bad. Then when I installed it, they stayed on the phone with me and walked me through the entire process.

Re: The Ask anything about computers thread
For some reason the Mozilla Firefox icon isn't showing up on my desktop. Instead I've just got a white box, but when I click on it, Firefox still opens up. I tried deleting the icon and reloading it, but that didn't seem to help.
It's a minor inconvenience but does anyone know how I can correct it?

Re: The Ask anything about computers thread
Try reinstalling Firefox or installing Tweak UI and using the repair icons option (you can get the app at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx)

Ugh. My laptop isn't able to get the updates for AVG for some reason. I have an internet connection and can access sites, but it won't connect for the updates and I can't even get to AVG's website from that computer, but I can from the other laptop.

Re: The Ask anything about computers thread
Is yours asking you to restart it so that it can get the updates and then not getting the updates? I'm getting the updates on my laptop, after some problems last week, but on my mom's laptop it keeps asking her to restart it to get the updates even though we just did.
