Marine believed to be in Iwo Jima photo dies at 82

    Rest in peace, Sir.

REDDING, Calif. - Raymond Jacobs, believed to be the last surviving member of the group of Marines photographed during the original U.S. flag-raising on Iwo Jima during World War II, has died at age 82.

Jacobs died Jan. 29 of natural causes at a Redding hospital, his daughter, Nancy Jacobs, told The Associated Press.

Jacobs had spent his later years working to prove that he was the radio operator photographed looking up at an American flag as it was being raised by other Marines on Mount Suribachi on Feb. 23, 1945.

    R-I-P and Semper Fi.

I'm curious, how would anyone prove that it's them if the photo doesn't even show anyone's face?

Anyway, I don't know how accurate it is, but in this link, he's not named as one of the 6 flag raises from the photo:

He's not in that photo. He's in the first flag-raising photo from when they raised the smaller American flag originally. The raising of the larger American flag was more of just a photo-op - done specifically so a photographer could get a more spectacular picture of them raising a large flag. Of course, it become the famous photo we all know today, as opposed to the first photo, which is largely forgotten (considering it's not a dramatic photo).

I would suggest to anyone who is interested in this topic to read the book or watch the movie called "Flags of our Fathers" to get a true picture of the raising of this flag on Iwo Jima and also to understand what the marines were up against in this horrific battle to gain control of this island in the Pacific.
