Re: Andy Phillips to be called up
I don't mind the Josh Phelps DFA.. but I would rather it have been done after the interleague play than before it. We need the pinch hitters

Phelps had some big hits too

Re: Andy Phillips to be called up
When did he have "big hits?" I recall perhaps one occasion, where as every other game he was a GIDP machine.

Re: Andy Phillips to be called up
Welcome back, Andy Phillips.
Ultimately Josh Phelps did not fit on the team. We have a pressing need for a 1st baseman, and that he is not. It's one thing to say we have a weak bench, but if you examine Phelps, where was he supposed to fit in besides the occassional PH for Miguel Cairo?
Last season Phillips did the following:
April (26 AB): .154/.214/.269
May (36 AB): .306/.333/.389
June (69 AB): .333/.347/.623
July (91 AB): .165/.208/.275
He only got 19 AB the rest of 2006.
Rookie Season: 110 G, 246 AB, 7 HR, 29 RBI, .240/.281/.394GO YANKS
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 20, 23, 32, 37, 42, 44, 46, 49, 51

Re: Andy Phillips to be called up
I like Andy, he is not a long-term answer at first by any means but I think he is a better option than both Phelps and Cairo.

Doesn't Baltimore need a bullpen coach now - at least until Girardi takes the Manager's job?

If Andy got to play everyday he could be a good 1st baseman

As a short-term stopgap while Cashman works the phones, this is fine. Phillips gives you most of the "benefits," such as they are, of Cairo's D and Phelps' O, while only taking up one roster spot.
I'm a little surprised Phelps got the ax first instead of Basak, but ultimately they're probably both gone soon.

Re: Andy Phillips to be called up
Anybody know if he learned to hit a breaking ball yet? I don't think I can stomach another platinum sombrero.
I hope he can hold the fort down for now...at least he can play D unlike Phelps.

Re: Andy Phillips to be called up
Too bad. I had high hopes for Phelps, I was thinking he could put up at least a .280/.350/.450 line.
