I agree, but this particular God Bless America is a strain on even this very board, let alone the poor ears that have to be subjected to it.

    Agreed 100%. It is painful.

Ronan should be recognized as this generation's Robert Merrill.

Maybe it's Ronan that will get a plaque in Memorial Park... ooops, wrong thread.

Belt-it-out fat-lady singers are out of fashion now but Kate Smith made the song famous. Considering the Yankees' practice of talking "tradition" while flouting it in practice (Hideki Matsui "Yankeeography"?), it's kind of refreshing to see them respect history.

Speaking of which, if they play a canned Merrill all the time for the Anthem, certaintly Merrill must have recorded GBA at some point that they could be using as well?

I must say, though, that I am not fond of Kate Smith, either.

Interestingly, it took 67 years and three generations for people to get sick of Kate Smith's version, whereas it took people approximately two minutes to get sick of Celine Dion's version.

It could be worse - it could be Ethel Mermon singing.

Ooh, uh, yeah. I'm going to have to go ahead and sort of disagree with you there. Ethel Merman was way, way better than Kate Smith.

    1. I agree with you. Merman had a very powerful and precise voice.
    2. However, Merman singing God Bless America? Not her type of song.
    3. I've had enough of the song too.
    Let the kids play.

Merman was married to Ernie Borgnine for a brief moment. So she had that going for her.

Agreed. However, I'd much rather hear Merman singing God Bless America than Kate Smith singing Rose's Turn.

At least we don't have to listen to Ronan Tynan's 11-minute rendition anymore. But it's way past time to stop doing it altogether.

OK, which is worse. Kate Smith singing GBA, or Ether Merman's disco record..

    Discuss...

    Cheers!

p.s. - For the record, Kate's version of GBA was and always will be a Flyer's anthem.. And I HATE HATE HATE the Flyers..

I have never heard Ethel Merman's disco record. That makes Smith's GBA worse.

I hated it. I don't like the song at all to begin with, and Tynan sang it soooooo slooooowwwwwwly. And that was just the intro; after that he slowed the tempo down even more.

    Plus he looked like Shrek.
