Kate Smith - GAAWWWDDD Bless America

    Ok,
I may get some crap for this, and I understand that The Boss really likes her rendition, but GOOD LORD, I can't stand hearing her "GAAAAWWWDDD" to start the song.
Yes, I'm patriotic, yes I love America, but for the love of God, please cease and desist from piping this noise pollution throughout the Stadium.

I thought Ronan's version was great, sure it's a bit lengthy, but cut out his introduction and just play the meat of the song.

Well Kate did win the Stanley Cup in 1974

Kate Smith Sings God Bless America before 1974 Stanley Cup

Kate Smith gives an incredible performance of God Bless America before the 6th game of the 1974 Stanley Cup Finals in Philadelphia. The Flyers were almost unbeatable when this song was played before games. And with Kate Smith there in person, the Bruins had no chance. Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito show her great respect and shake her hand after the stiring performance.

At least it makes more sense than "Cotten Eyed Joe". Does anyone know why the NEW YORK YANKEES (of all teams) traditionally play a very southern song at their home games? I like that the Mets play that Italian party song (don't know the name, but they sang it at the wedding in Godfather 1) during the 7th inning...at least that makes some sort of sense.

Yeah, well, at least Cotton Eyed Joe isn't played on tv every game, too.
I hate it also, though, just the same.

I'm a New Yorker and a fan of New York sports teams. I will always associate Kate Smith with the Flyers. She was theirs first and in my mind, will always be theirs.

Personally, I think it's overkill playing the song at every home game in 2007, but it's probably just me being unpatriotic again.
Is this the end of the Brian Cashman era?

Ooh, that sounds cool. I like that idea....although the Yanks would never adopt something like that from the Mets...unlike the Mets ripping off Sandman from Mo.....BURN.....

I'll probably get ripped for saying this too but I can't stand the way she sings it....it's definitely time for something new. I'd much rather hear a taped version of Ronan Tynan singing it. I love his voice.

they should just give ronnan a big blank check to be at every home game.

what i dont understand is how they decide wehther or not to use ronnan during a game. i went to the game when the red sox were in town and they had him sing it live.

but when i went to the series finale against the angels a few sundays ago they used the kate smith version. not a big deal, but it was memorial day weekend, i figured they would have had him there live to sing it for memorial day.

Kate Smith was 69-19-3 in Flyers home games. She was the Joe Beningo of her day "with a face like mine, you know why I am on radio". Someone actually tried to make a film with her as the star. It worked about as well as the Liberace movie in the 1950s or the Luciano Pavarotti film in the 1980s.

I'm old. In my mind, Kate Smith does not belong to any sports team.

wikipedia says it was actually a popular song in nationwide in the 19th century although in recent times it is mainly popular in the South. Appaqrently it was brought to life in the movie "Urban Cowboy", a movie I have avoided as much as I avoid Kate Smith and Liberace movies (I did see "Yes, Giorgio" once. It ain't too bad although Kathryn Harrold must have asked her agent "All you can get me is a film playing love scenes with Luciano Pavarotti? He makes Mike Francesa look like he's in shape").

I personally would rather not have this. Moment of silence for the troops who have died, yes. The Anthem before the game, yes. This is a bit overboard though. Especially for it to have gone on this long. The Anthem is what all of sports have been doing forever and IMO that is good enough.

Agreed. I don't mind her rendition of it, but it seems cheesy to be lifting a Flyers' tradition.

Of course, I also agree with Yankees1962 and Hitman that it's pretty silly to even be doing it every game, so what do I know.

George should bring back Daniel Rodriguez, the "Singing Cop" who performed in 2001 playoffs.

I will never forget our first home game after 9/11 which was with the Yankees. I think John McDermott sang that night.
