Most underachieving franchises of all time?
You can pick any team you want, but I'm going to throw one out of left field to start us off.
I'm going to say the Los Angeles Lakers. Yes, yes I know some of you are going to laugh your head off, but if you really think about it, they have underachieved a bit.
Yes I know they have won 14 NBA Championships, and with that they have been Conference champions 28 times. So they have lost in the NBA finals 14 times. That's a lot. Even if they lose half of those, they would have 21 championships. By the way they have lost in the Western Conference finals 4 times
8 of those 14 were to Boston, who happen to have the most championships with 16. 4 of the 8 were lost in 7 games. If the Lakers only lose half of those 8 finals they would be the most successful team in NBA history.
The Lakers have also won the most games then any other team in NBA history. They also have made it to the playoffs more then any other team. Only missing out 5 times in 58 seasons
So like I said if they win half of those finals they would have around 21 championships. That would put them right up there with the Yankees and Canadiens in championships.
So you can't say the Lakers have not achieved, but looking at this you can say they have underachieved also. Maybe not the most underachieving franchise of all time. But I would put them up there IMO.

Buffalo Bills; as much as I love 'em and as much as they should have lost all 4 of those SB (they were definitely the 2nd best team); the loss to the titans on the forward/lateral pass and just in general the depression of the team lately despite having an NFL top 5 defense 2 years ago still couldn't make the playoffs.

You mean the NHL team that nobody in Chicago cares about anymore?

Hawk tickets used to be the hottest in town, now they can't give them away. I promised to never attend another game until Wirtz died or sold the team but I took advantage of the free ticket promotion for one of the games last week, sat third row from the glass, and only cost me $3 in Ticketmaster fees."I have discovered in 20 years of moving around the ballpark that the knowledge of the game is usually in inverse proportion to the price of the seats." -Bill Veeck

The Bills were better than the Giants, that was the one they should have won.

The Arizona Cardinals and Detroit Lions have to be up there. How could these two franchises be so bad for so long, in a league that's built for parity?

I tend to look at underachieving as being consitently good and having the oppertunity to win, but still not. Those two teams aren't even on success's radar.
