My take on Revis...
He'll sign for six years after a lengthy holdout.
- If he sits and reenters the draft, he'll likely be picked in the bottom 16 of the 1st round, which means the team who drafts him will likely force him to a six year deal.
- In that case, Revis will have no choice other than to miss two precious seasons of his football life.
- Rat Boy learned everything from Bellichick. If the Jets feel that they have the upper hand, they won't give in.
The problem is the agents. If Revis' agent agrees to a six year deal, come January (or sooner), other agents will use this against him in the recruiting wars.
The Pats had the same situation with Ben Watson. Tom Condon, who's killing Brady Quinn's career before it even starts, had to be fired rather than having his name attached to a 6-year rookie contract.[U]Reason Online

Re: The Official 2007 New York Jets Analysis Thread
I still say Revis is going to be awful. I watched a lot of Pitt football games and he didn't impress me whatsoever. Please do not think this is just because I cheer for an AFC East team. If you note the draft thread we had I was praying that we didn't take Revis.

Just give him a 5 year deal and get him into camp already!

Taylor, visit the fantasy football thread please. Payments are being made for the season and rules discussions are underway that could use your input. Thanks.

If you go back to that thread...you will see me say the same stuff. I didnt want him. He's on the team now, so we'll see what happens but I'm not overly optimistic.

I'll trade Assante Samuel for Revis, straight up.

I'm not a fan of either team but if that deal was ever on the table, the Jets would be stupid to pass it up.

5 years of Revis at a rookie salary > 1 year of overpaying a CB with a 7.5 YPA in 2006.

Revis is going to make Ahmad Carroll look like the second coming of Champ Bailey, IMO. I understand your logic in terms of salary however.

I dont think I would do that...Samuel is good but not THAT good. Certainly not worth the contract he is asking for.

Re: The Official 2007 New York Jets Analysis Thread
Good article in the Post today about how Mangini and Tannenbaum's arrogance is hurting the team:
http://www.nypost.com/seven/08032007...cannizzaro.htm
The question that must be raised in relation to both of these contractual impasses is this: Are the Jets being a bit too arrogant for their Kelly-green britches?
The answer here is a resounding "Yes."
The Jets appear to be a pretty sound, good team with a chance to at least put a scare into the Patriots for the AFC East title, and they're certainly a favorite to compete for a playoff berth. But they're not good enough to mess with their product the way management is doing with both Revis and Kendall, two key pieces to the playoff-bound model Eric Mangini is trying to construct during these dog days of summer.
The Jets traded up 12 spots in the first round to draft Revis with the hope he'd win a starting cornerback spot right away.
Revis wants a five-year contract, the same as almost every draft pick in the first round has signed (including the two players drafted before and after him). The Jets want Revis to sign a six-year deal.
Is that one year really worth squabbling over while Revis misses out on all this valuable developmental time? That missed time is certain to stunt his growth and ability to contribute right away this season. If Revis ends up being a non-factor this season from falling so far behind, will this contract dance seem worth it five or six years from now? Of course not.
But Kendall and this Jets regime are not a good fit, because Kendall is a player who, while not disruptive, speaks his mind - not the kind of player the Jets want to fill their roster
It's always easy to side with players over management. But in this case, it appears so simple for GM Mike Tannenbaum and Mangini to have avoided these bumps in their training camp road. Specifically, one fewer year for Revis and $1 million more for Kendall and their team would be better today and for the season. The Jets are toying with two significant elements to their potential success in 2007, and they're not good enough to mess with those things and still challenge the likes of New England and the rest of the AFC elite.

The jets should have a spectacular season this year with mangini not being rookie head coach anymore and the offseason moves im geussing an 2-2 preseason and a 11-5 regular season.

The Pats would have handled Kendall the same way. Revis too.
OTOH, the Jets don't have the clout of 3 SBs and in the BB years of 2000 and 2001, the Pats might have handled both situations differently.[U]Reason Online

Bingo. The Pats can be somewhat arrogant because they have 3 rings. The Jets dont have one. They cant afford to act like the Pats do.

The Jets do have a ring, it is just getting a bit old.

Re: The Official 2007 New York Jets Analysis Thread
From PFT...
POSTED 7:59 p.m. EDT; LAST UPDATED 9:27 p.m. EDT, August 7, 2007
REVIS, JETS STILL AT ODDS
With only two first-round holdouts remaining, the Jets and No. 14 pick Darrelle Revis continue to be locked in a stare down regarding the length of the contract.
Because Revis, a cornerback, was taken among the first 16 picks, the Jets are entitled to require him to sign a contract with a maximum length of six years. But all of the other guys taken in the vicinity of Revis have signed five-year contracts (or six-year deals that easily void to five). Thus, the Revis camp wants the Jets to ignore the rule that permits a six-year term because most of the other teams exercising picks in the top half of round one already have done so.
The Jets, however, aren't budging.
So what happens next? Per a league source, the indications are that Revis would do a six-year deal if the money is right not only in year six, but also in year five.
The thinking is that incentives pushing the Revis salary in year six to the amount of the franchise tender won't be enough to get the agents to bite, since a player who signs a five-year deal already faces the possibility of being slapped with the franchise tag in year six. For a six-year deal, however, the first true franchise tag year would be the seventh season.
But if the deal were to have fair triggers that would push the pay in year five and year six to extraordinary levels, then the team would have a strong incentive to negotiate an extension after four years.
The other reality here is that, with so many guys taken in the top 16 signing five-year deals, agents Neil Schwartz and Jonathan Feinsod risk having a six-year deal used against them in recruiting. As we've said before, and surely will say again, it shouldn't be an issue. But it is. And will be.
So the Jets can either do a five-year deal, or they can negotiate a six-year package that makes it wise for Revis to defer free agency one more year into the future. Until that happens, they'll get nothing in return for everything they sacrificed to move up in round one to draft Revis.[U]Reason Online

About damn time they signed him. He missed enough camp that it pretty much relegates him to ST for at least the early part of the season.
