The year of 2004 was an especially difficult year for Blake. While practicing with Robby Ginepri for the Masters being held in Rome, he broke his neck by running into a net-post. In July he lost his father to stomach cancer. At the same time, Blake developed shingles that temporarily paralyzed half his face and blurred his sight. Blake doubted if he would ever play tennis again.
