Mets Close to Signing Moises Alou?
http://www.metsblog.com
In the New York Post, Mark Hale reports that the Mets have interest in free-agent OF Moises Alou.
According to Listin Diario, a newspaper out of Santo Domingo, the Mets and Alou have discussed a one-year, $8 million contract. The report cites a close friend to the player as providing the information.

Good when a fan catches a foul ball in the 2007 NLCS he can spazz out about how it singlehandedly cost them the seven game series.

Makes their lineup a little deeper when he is healthy, not bad.

Hopefully, Julio Franco will start calling him "junior"...

He will do an excellent job of replacing Floyd...they need a LF'er who's overaged, overpriced and ready to spend atleast 1/3 of the season on the DL...for 8 mil a year...go get'em boys.

Re: Mets Close to Signing Moises Alou?
I think this signing is a little silly. Omar really is looking for an all-Hispanic team (Full disclosure: my girlfriend is from the DR and loves the signing).
This signing doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, unless they are planning to trade Milledge and not give one of the other kids a shot. If this money keeps them from signing Zito, it's a bad move.

Re: Mets Close to Signing Moises Alou?
There's absolutely zero worry about that. Not only are they a NY team that is getting more popular since they're good again and have a bunch of really marketable players, but they also just launched their own cable channel last year, and will be raking in even more dough.

Gee, what happened to Omar following Cashman in the "not going to overspend this offseason" mentality that Newsday mentioned the other day?
Don't look down here.

Re: Mets Close to Signing Moises Alou?
From a Red Sox fan perspective, I hope this deal happens, if it hasn't already.
I don't think this deal completely eliminates the possibility of a trade of Manny to the Mets, but it certainly makes it less likely. I'd rather the Sox kept Manny in all events, and the players that were reportedly coming back from the Mets have never excited me. Milledge, Heilman, etc. have always seemed like chump change next to Manny.
In any event, I'm very happy to see Moises Alou going to Shea.
PS: Yankees76, the Hispanic point is there and Omar does look a little bit focused on Hispanic players, but Shawn Green, David Wright, Paul LaDuca, Aaron Heilman, Damion Easley and Tom Glavine sure don't look Hispanic.

He is a proven producer. Plus, it ought to improve clubhouse chemistry a bit. Franco will finally have a teammate who can relate to growing up in the 50s.

From 2004-06, he's played 155, 123 and 98 games. Is this who you give a 2-year, high-priced contract to?
http://www.baseball-reference.com/a/aloumo01.shtml
He's only played 11 games in LF in 2006, having played 81 in RF.Dr King (1929-68): A dream is forgotten unless others carry on.

It's a one-year deal and a stop-gap. He's a professional hitter and the Mets are a win-now team. How do you kill this?

Re: Mets Close to Signing Moises Alou?
I forgot about that. I was thinking that Don Omar was just throwing money around for no real reason, but he would be a good relplacement for Floyd.

Excellent. The more aging former Giants that are signed by other teams, the fewer will be available for Ned Colletti to go after.

Agreed. Would people rather give Carlos Lee 5 years and $75 million, Sori 8 years and $135 million, or J.D. Drew 4 years and $50 million?

Awful decision to take him on, he'll be injured over half the season. Unless he's a DH he doesn't have much value.

It's official as per WFAN, a one year deal with an option for a second.

One year deal is not bad. Milledge fills in when he is injured.

Pretty much my thoughts as well, in this market a one year deal is quite good.

Re: Mets Close to Signing Moises Alou?
He had an OPS last year of around .930 (off the top of my head). Considering the crazy market, I think this is a good signing.
